Born in Morges, Switzerland, Yann Sommer began his football journey playing for the local clubs FC Herrliberg and Concordia. Due to his impressive performance, he joined FC Basel’s youth set-up in 2003.
Sommer went through the Swiss club’s youth system for two years and then signed his first professional contract. He became the goalkeeper of the Under-21 squad almost immediately.
On February 2009, Yann Sommer made his Super League debut in a 3-2 defeat against Young Boys. The young goalkeeper played five more matches for Basel before the end of the 2009-10 season. He signed a new deal with the Swiss club that summer and officially became the second choice goalkeeper.
During the 2011-12 Yann Sommer became Basel’s first-choice goalkeeper. He impressed many with his performance that season, helping the club win the double of the league and the Swiss Cup.
During his time with Basel, Sommer made a total of 170 appearances and kept 65 clean sheets. The Swiss goalkeeper joined Borussia Monchengladbach in the summer of 2014 to replace Marc-Andre ter Stegen, who had joined La Liga giants FC Barcelona.
On 19 January 2023, FC Bayern Munich signed Yann Sommer from Borussia Monchengladbach after their number one goalkeeper Manuel Neuer suffered an injury. He left the Bundesliga at the end of the 2022-23 season and joined Italian giants Inter Milan.
