He was drafted by the Seattle Supersonics in the third round of the 1987 NBA draft and was soon cut from the team. He then played briefly in the Continental Basketball Association.

Amaker began his coaching career as an assistant coach at Duke for four seasons and helped the Blue Devils win two national championships.

Amaker was then hired by Seton Hall University as the head coach where he led the Pirates to two NCAA tournament appearances in four seasons.

The coach was then hired by Michigan University for six seasons. However, he was fired after his team failed to get to the NCAA tournament.
