Sunil Gavaskar began playing cricket when he was still young. In 1966, he was India’s Best Schoolboy Cricketer of the Year at the age of 17. He made his first-class cricket debut for Vazir Sultan Colt’s XI during the annual Moin-ud-Dowlah Gold Cup tournament, 1966-67.
In 1969-70, Gavaskar made his Ranji Trophy debut against Mysore. In March 1971, the batsman made his international debut, recording 65 and unbeaten 67. Three years later, he made his ODI debut against England at Headingley.
From 1976 to 1980, Gavaskar flaunted his calibre fullest, averaging 62.28. This included series in England, Pakistan, West Indies and Australia. His highest test-knock came against West Indies in Chennai when he scored an unbeaten 236.

Gavaskar took charge of India’s captaincy in Test in January 1976. He captained his nation for 47 tests, winning nine and losing eight. In December 1980, he took over as ODI captain. He led his country to win the World Championship of Cricket in Australia five years later.
Gavaskar had his last test innings for India in March 1987 against Pakistan. Despite an impressive 96, he could not save his country.
Later that year, India lost to England in the semi-final of World Cup in his hometown. Gavaskar announced his retirement afterwards. The cricket icon has since been a television commentator and a columnist. He also holds different responsibilities with the BCCI.
