Napoli release statement after controversial TikTok video targeting Victor Osimhen

  • Napoli have issued a statement apologizing to Victor Osimhen after offensive TikTok video
  • Chelsea is currently monitoring Osimhen’s situation at Napoli
  • The Nigerian striker had threatened to take a legal action against the Serie A side

SSC Napoli has issued an apology to Victor Osimhen following the controversial TikTok video they posted earlier in the week. This comes after Osimhen had threatened legal action against the Serie A champions due to the offensive video, which was published in the wake of his missed penalty during a 0-0 draw with Bologna on Sunday.

The TikTok post, which mocked Osimhen, deeply angered the striker, leading him to promptly delete all Napoli-related content from his Instagram account. Osimhen’s agent, Roberto Calenda, subsequently confirmed on Wednesday that the player was considering taking legal action against the club for the video, which he deemed “unacceptable.”

Calenda addressed the media, stating, “What happened today on Napoli’s official profile on the TikTok platform is not acceptable. A video mocking Victor was first made public and then, but now belatedly, deleted. A serious fact that causes very serious damage to the player and adds to the treatment that the boy is suffering in the last period between media trials and fake news. We reserve the right to take legal action and any useful initiative to protect Victor.”

In response to this controversy, Napoli has now issued an official statement apologizing to Osimhen. The club clarified that their intention was never to “offend or mock” the player with the TikTok video.

The club’s statement reads, “Calcio Napoli, wishing to avoid any exploitation of the issue, point out that we never wanted to offend or mock Victor Osimhen, who is a treasure of this club. As proof of that, during the summer training retreat, the club firmly rebuffed every offer that was received for the striker’s transfer abroad.”

The statement continues, “Social media, in particular TikTok, has always used an expressive form of language with a light heart and creativity, without wanting to, as in the case with Osimhen as protagonist, have any intention of insult or derision. In any case, if Victor perceived any offense towards him, this was not what the club intended.”

Despite the apology, this incident has raised concerns about Osimhen’s future at Napoli. Chelsea is reportedly monitoring the situation closely, considering a move for the talented striker during the summer 2024 transfer window. Napoli had been eager to secure Osimhen with a long-term contract following his instrumental role in their recent Scudetto win, but ongoing negotiations have reportedly hit a snag due to various issues, including the controversial TikTok post.

As this situation unfolds, Osimhen’s future in Napoli remains uncertain, and the controversy surrounding the TikTok video has further complicated contract talks with the club.
