Newcastle United knocked Manchester City out of the Carabao Cup following a 1-0 victory at St. James’ Park on Wednesday night. Alexander Isak scored the only goal of the match to secure a spot for the Magpies in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup.
Newcastle United testing victory against Manchester City for the first time in eleven meetings means they can dream of Wembley again this year. However, they will have to first defeat their conquerors in last season’s final Manchester United when they meet in the fourth round. The clash will take place in the week of October 30.

Eddie Howe’s side are now undefeated in four games after a run of three straight losses. They will be facing Burnley this weekend with Paris Saint-Germain waiting on Wednesday in the Champions League.
Speaking after the victory against Manchester City, Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe said his team is aiming for a better spot than last season‘s runner-up finish.
“It was a game of two halves for us. The first half was tough. Man City played well, we didn’t play particularly well but defended well. Then second half we were excellent in most aspects and probably deserved to win in the end. The run last year was an inspiration to us. Something we look back on with real pride. We want to go one further if we can, although there’s a long way to go. We’re still there fighting.” Sky Sports quotes Eddie Howe.
How The Game Unfolded
Newcastle United made ten changes from Sunday’s massive victory at Sheffield United. On the other hand, Manchester City opted for seven changes in the Carabao Cup clash against Newcastle United.
City dominated the first 30 minutes of the match and the Magpies were almost completely camped in their own final third. The visitors had a clear opportunity to open the scoring when Oscar Bobb drove forward and fed Julian Alvarez. However, Nick Pope’s outstretched foot prevented an opening goal to keep his side in the game.
The impressive Bobb, who is 20, linked up with Alvarez once again but the Argentine forward shot wide. With City struggling to break Newcastle’s defence, it was obvious that Howe’s side would find a way to make an attack. Well, Newcastle had their chance on 41 minutes with an amazing counter-attack but Jacob Murphy missed the golden opportunity with only with the keeper to beat.
The teams went into the break goalless and Howe made a few changes, introducing the lethal Bruno Guimaraes and Anthony Gordon. The changes had an impact almost immediately with Alexander Isak opening the scoring in the 53rd minute.

Well, that turned out to be the only goal of the match as the closest the visitors came to forcing a penalty shootout was a Rico Lewis shot that he dragged past the post.
