Liverpool came from behind to beat Leicester City 3-1 in the Carabao Cup third round clash played at Anfield on Wednesday night. Kasey McAteer gave Leicester the lead just three minutes into the match but second half goals from Cody Gakpo, Dominik Szoboszlai and Diogo Jota helped the hosts turn the match around.

Jurgen Klopp made several changes to his squad and must have questioned his decisions when Kasey McAteer opened the scoring. The 21-year-old showed a lot of composure to slot past Caoimhin Kelleher and give his side a reason to celebrate with a few minutes into the match.

However, the goal turned out to be Leicester’s only shot on target as Liverpool completely dominated the match afterwards. Cody Gakpo had the hosts level a few minutes into the second half, which was a justification of their dominance.

Liverpool needed to win the match and Klopp brought in Darwin Nunez and Dominik Szoboszlai in the 65th minute. Barely five minutes later Szoboszlai scored a stunner to put the Reds in front. He received the ball 25 yards out and then took a touch before firing past Leicester’s helpless goalkeeper. Speaking after the match, Szoboszlai said the goal was one of his best.

It was very special. I don’t know if it was the best goal, I scored one of my best in the national team and also in Salzburg. But one of the best for sure.” BBC Sports quotes the midfielder.

Jurgen Klopp also spoke about the strike saying: “I don’t have to tell him to shoot, he knows better than I – he’s really good. That is a really good skill. [It was a] super goal.”

Another brilliant finish from Diogo Jota in the dying minutes of the game put the result beyond doubt. The 2022 winners set up a trip to AFC Bournemouth in the next round of the Carabao Cup. The tie is scheduled to take place in the week commencing Monday October 30.

The Reds have now extended their unbeaten streak from last season and could be a threat this season. Speaking after the victory over Leicester City, Jurgen Klopp admitted his side didn’t have a good start.

“It was not the best start, it was actually the opposite. We had big chances in the first half and couldn’t believe we didn’t score. Leicester are a good side and very well set up. Minute by minute we turned it around and it was a good performance. There were so many little stories.” Tribal Football quotes Jurgen Klopp.

Leicester City may have been eliminated from Carabao but they are putting in work in the Championship. The Foxes, who were relegated from the Premier League last season, are level on points with Ipswich Town atop the Championship. They are seeking an immediate return to England’s top flight.
