- Germany announced Julian Nagelsmann as the new head coach of the men’s national team
- DFB approached Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp before sacking Hansi Flick
- Jurgen Klopp was, however keen on staying at Liverpool and turned down the job offer
Liverpool manager, Jurgen Klopp, declined an approach from the German Football Association (DFB) regarding the option of assuming control of the Germany national team.
This overture from the DFB came in the wake of their parting ways with Hansi Flick on September 10th. Flick’s tenure had been marked by a challenging period, characterized by a dismal record of just four victories in 17 matches. The low point came with a disheartening 4-1 home defeat to Japan earlier this month, which prompted the DFB to seek a fresh direction for the national team.
It was widely reported following Flick’s departure that the DFB had identified Jurgen Klopp as a leading candidate to fill the coveted role of head coach. However, Klopp’s agent swiftly dismissed these speculations only days after they had surfaced.

Subsequently, the DFB moved forward with the appointment of Julian Nagelsmann as Germany’s head coach. Nagelsmann’s contract extends until the conclusion of Euro 2024, a tournament that holds particular significance for Germany as it will unfold on their home turf.
Nevertheless, the DFB had not limited their interest in Klopp to the aftermath of Flick’s exit. Even prior to formalizing Flick’s dismissal, they had approached the 56-year-old Liverpool manager. However, in these discussions, Klopp unequivocally communicated his lack of interest in departing from his current role at Liverpool at this juncture.
Jurgen Klopp’s decision to remain steadfastly committed to Liverpool is underpinned by his professional ambitions and the timing of his career. While he does harbor aspirations to manage the Germany national team, he deems it inappropriate to consider such a transition at the present phase of his journey in football management.
In a recent interview with RTL, Klopp eloquently articulated the rationale behind his loyalty to Liverpool, stating, “We’re building Liverpool 2.0 here, we want to attack again and not just look at how much longer can we go on. I have a loyalty to Liverpool. My heart is here in Liverpool. You can’t just cut out the eight years. I signed a contract here and, as far as I can remember, I wasn’t drugged or tied up and had to sign with my mouth. That was a free decision. And that’s why it doesn’t fit.”
Klopp’s commitment to Liverpool extends beyond contractual obligations; it embodies a deep emotional connection to the club and its fans. He envisions a future where Liverpool reclaims its place as a footballing powerhouse, embarking on a new chapter marked by ambition and success. Klopp’s words serve as a testament to the enduring bond he shares with Liverpool, a bond that transcends the allure of other opportunities and cements his status as one of the most revered figures in the club’s history.
