Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana admitted responsibility for last night’s UEFA Champions League defeat against Bayern Munich.

Erik ten Hag‘s side suffered a 4-3 defeat at Allianz Arena, and Onana feels it was his failure to keep out Leroy Sane’s first goal, that cost the Reds who had started so well and looked comfortable.

“It’s difficult, you know. It’s difficult to lose this way because I feel in the beginning, we started very good. After my mistake, we lost the control of the game. You know, it’s a difficult situation and for me especially because I’m the one who let the team down. But the team was very good, I think it’s because of me, that they didn’t win this game. So I’m happy for the work of the team. We just have to move on. This is the life of the goalkeeper and, if we didn’t win today, it is because of me.” Manchester United’s official website quotes Andre Onana.

Although Andre Onana had an unhappy European debut for Manchester United, he made several crucial saves during the match.

How Bayern Munich Beat Manchester United

Manchester United were given a taste of what could have been in a high-scoring match and eventful Champions League opener on Wednesday.

The Red Devils had a disciplined start to the match and tried to contain Bayern Munich. However, a shocking error from Andre Onana allowed Leroy Sane’s shot to cross the line in the 28th minute. It was Bayern Munich’s first shot on target.

Four minutes later, the Bavarians doubled their lead courtesy of Serge Gnabry. Talented youngster Jamal Musiala made a brilliant run with the ball through United’s defence to find an unmarked Serge Gnabry in the box. The Germain international made no mistake as he finished into the far corner.

With Manchester United trailing 2-0, everyone expected things to go south for them. However, the players remained cool and went into the break without conceding another goal.

Erik ten Hag’s side started the second half positively and found a goal in the 49th minute. Bayern failed to clear the ball from the danger zone allowing Casemiro to find Marcus Rashford, who laid it off to Rasmus Hojlund. The Danish forward fired in his first goal for the Red Devils.

However, Bayern Munich restored their two goal lead a few minutes later through Harry Kane. The former Tottenham Hotspur man buried the spot-kick after Christian Eriksen was penalised for handling in the box.

With time running out, Casemiro somehow managed to pull one back for Manchester United in the 88th minute. But once again, United were poor defensively allowing Mathys Tel to add Bayern’s fourth of the night. Sensationally, United pulled another through Casemiro seconds before the final whistle.
