Arsenal marked their return to the UEFA Champions League with perfect performance last night as they faced PSV Eindhoven. The Gunners thrashed PSV 4-0 at the Emirates Stadium to make up for the six years they have been away from Europe’s top club competition.

Mikel Arteta’s side scored three goals in a dazzling first half last night. Bukayo Saka opened the scoring before Leandro Trossard and Gabriel Jesus put the Gunners 3-0 up with five minutes to the half time break. Martin Odegaard scored Arsenal’s fourth goal of the night in the 70th minute.

Absence from Champions League had made Arsenal’s heart grow fonder and the huge victory on their first match since the 2016/17 season is all that they needed. Speaking after the match, Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta said it was great back to be back at the Champions League.

“It was a beautiful night. After such a long time we needed to produce the right performance to try to win the game. It was great to see the atmosphere, the Champions League music. It was getting a bit emotional before. We showed in both boxes we were exceptional and that was the difference. We earned the right to be in this competition which is where we have to be as a club and now we have a responsibility to produce to stay at this level.” Sky Sports quotes Mikel Arteta.

How Arsenal Thrashed PSV Eindhoven

The Emirates was a cacophony of noise last night as Arsenal played their first UEFA Champions League match since the 2016-17 season. However, Arsenal fans didn’t expect the game to be easy considering PSV beat the Gunners in last season’s UEFA Europa League.

But Mikel Arteta had planned the script different this time and there was no way PSV were going to record victory at the Emirates Stadium.

The Gunners completely swept aside PSV in the early phases of the match, with Gabriel Jesus showing how dangerous he can be when fit. However, it was Starboy Saka who opened the scoring after just eight minutes of play. The talented winger pounced on a spill from Walter Benitez to score on his first UEFA Champions League match.

With the momentum on their side, it didn’t take long before Arsenal doubled their lead. Saka was the architect this time as Leandro Trossard fired a sublime first-time strike from the edge of the box.

Despite being 2-0 up, Mikel Arteta’s side were not slowing down. Gabriel Jesus, who had missed several chances, finally converted to give Arsenal a 3-0 lead before the break.

PSV came back with a different strategy in the second half and actually created several chances. However, David Raya who started ahead of Aaron Ramsdale proved to be solid at the back.

Captain Martin Odegaard scored Arsenal’s fourth goal of the night in the 70th minute. It was a brilliant performance from the Gunners who face Tottenham Hotspur this weekend.
