Mason Greenwood to leave Man United by mutual consent

Manchester United have finally come to a decision after concluding its internal investigation into the allegations made against Mason Greenwood. According to a statement posted on the club’s official website, Greenwood will leave the club by mutual consent.

Greenwood had been suspended from Manchester United training and matches until the club completed an internal investigation. The club said that all parties involved recognized how difficult it would be for Greenwood to start his career again at Old Trafford.

“Based on the evidence available to us, we have concluded that the material posted online did not provide a full picture and that Mason did not commit the offences in respect of which he was originally charged. All those involved, including Mason, recognize the difficulties with him recommencing his career at Manchester United. It has therefore been mutually agreed that it would be most appropriate for him to do so away from Old Trafford.” Part of the statement reads.

Manchester United CEO Richard Arnold said that reintegrating Greenwood into the first team was considered and planned for. However, they took several factors into account before making the final decision today, August 21, 2023.

Mason Greenwood was charged in October 2022 with assault, controlling and coercive behaviour and attempted rape. This was after a material published online earlier in 2022 showed a man, who is alleged to be Greenwood, was heard shouting at a woman to “move your legs up”.

The woman on the video, who is Greenwood’s girlfriend, responded by saying she didn’t want to have sex. The man then said “I don’t give a [expletive] what you want, you little [expletive]. The video then continues with the man saying “Push me again and watch what happens to you.”

After going through trials, the charges against Mason Greenwood were dropped in February 2023. According to the Crown Prosecution Service, key witnesses had withdrawn and new material had come to light.

Mason Greenwood is an academy graduate of Manchester United. He joined the club in 2007 and went through their youth system before making his senior debut in 2018. The talented forward scored in a match against Astana in the UEFA Europa League in September 2019 to become Manchester United’s youngest ever goalscorer in European competitions. He was at the time aged 17 years, 353 days.

Greenwood continued to impress while playing for the Red Devils and soon became a regular starter. It was until January 2022 when things went sour for him after he was arrested on suspicion of raping and assaulting a woman as well as threatening to kill.

Following the decision made by Manchester United on his future today, Mason Greenwood responded by saying it was best for him to leave the club.
