Personal Life

Mageean was born on March 12 1992 in Portaferry, Northern Ireland to Chris Mageean and Ann Mageean.

Her father is a former hurler who played for Portaferry and is also a keen cyclist and golfer.

Mageean’s mother, Ann, is a former camogie player who also played for Portaferry and is a qualified physiotherapist. Her only brother is also a hurler who plays for Portaferry and his name is Conor.

She attended Assumption Grammar School in Ballynahinch where she was a star athlete, winning numerous individual and team titles including the All-Ireland Schools Cross Country Championship.

The athlete is a graduate of University College Dublin where she pursued a Bachelor’s degree in Physiotherapy and earned herself a scholarship known as the UCD Ad Astra Elite Athlete Scholarship.

Ciara has been in a long-term relationship with her fellow Athlete Thomas Moran whom she schooled with back in the University but has not made their marriage plans yet.

Career

Ciara Mageean is a middle-distance runner from Portaferry, Northern Ireland who specialises in the 1500 meters. She is a three-time European Athletics Championship medalist, having won bronze twice and a silver medal in 2022 at the Commonwealth Games.

She started running at the age of 11 years and she won two silver medals at the World Junior Championships and the World Youth Championships.

 Two years later, she won another silver medal in the 1500m at the European Junior Championships. Mageean made her senior international debut at the 2010 Commonwealth Games where she finished in the 10th position.

In 2016, Mageean won a bronze medal at the European Athletics Championships and also qualified to represent her country at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio where she finished tenth position in the 1500m.

Over the years, her performance has gradually improved and three years later from the Summer Olympics, she won a bronze medal at the European Athletics Indoor Championships and a silver medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, setting a record for the Irish in the 1500m in 2020.

The athlete performed very well at the 2023 World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Hungary where she finished fourth in the 1500-meter final setting a new record for Ireland with a time of 3:56:61.

Though she missed a medal by one position, Mageean gave her best and in the final lap, she was overtaken by Diribe Welteji of Ethiopia and Sifan Hassan of the Netherlands.

In her career, Ciara has never won a gold medal and this inevitably is what she has been aiming for and with her exclusive performance, it will be realized in one of the Championships.
