Women’s world No. 1 Iga Swiatek beat Laura Siegemund 6-0 6-1 on Sunday to win the Poland Open. It was a busy day for the Polish star who claimed her fourth title of the season, having won in Doha, Stuttgart and recently at Roland Garros. The Poland Open was her 15th career title .

Swiatek began the day by completing her semi-final match, which had been suspended on Saturday night due to darkness. The 22-year-old had no trouble wrapping up a 6-1 7-6(6) victory over Yanina Wickmayer before showing her prowess against Siegemund in the final. Swiatek was 6-1 5-5 up against Yanina by the time their semi-final match was being suspended.

Swiatek was totally dominant on home soil, not dropping even a single set throughout the tournament. Speaking after her victory, Swiatek said she was so happy to have won the title.

“I want to thank my team and my family. It’s not easy to play in Warsaw, but I’m so happy that we could manage and do everything we could today, after a pretty tiring day yesterday. I wanted to put it all in and go for it. I’m pretty happy that I did.” Eurosport quotes Iga Swiatek.

Laura Siegemund’s run to the final will see her rise from 153 in the WTA rankings. Swiatek praised the German for her incredible performance during the quarter-final and semi-final, which she played on Saturday. She won both matches after three sets.

Alexander Zverev Wins Hamburg Title

Meanwhile, hometown favourite Alexander Zverev beat Serbia’s Laslo Djere 7-5 6-3 to lift the Hamburg Open title. This is his first title since the 2021 ATP Finals in Turin, Italy. Zverev also became the first German player to win the title since Michael Stich in 1993.

Zverev reached the Hamburg Open final after recording victories over Alex Molcan, Maximilian Marterer, Luca van Assche and Arthur Fils. The fourth seed saw off Djere in impressive fashion as the crowd cheered. It was a ruthless play from Zverev as he converted three of his four break points, winning the final in just one hour and 51 minutes.

“At the end of the day, this is my home, this is where I grew up, and this where I started playing tennis. It was incredible for me, incredibly emotional. I can’t describe it in words, I’m just super happy right now. It’s almost like a first [title] again. It’s such a long time [since my previous title], 18 months, and I’m just super happy right now.” Alexander Zverev said after the match, as per Eurosport.

Zverev also praised Djere saying he is one of the most respected players on the tour. Dutch player Arantxa Rus won the women’s title which was played on Saturday.
