Spanish goalkeeper David de Gea has left Manchester United as a free agent following the expiry of his contract in June.
De Gea has been with the Red Devils for 12 years and leaves as a record breaker, having broken Peter Schmeichel’s club clean sheet record last season. The Spain international posted his farewell message on social media expressing gratitude to the fans for the love they have shown him over the years.

“I just wanted to send this farewell message to all Manchester United supporters. I would like to express my unwavering gratitude and appreciation for the love from the last 12 years. We’ve achieved a lot since my dear Sir Alex Ferguson brought me to this club. I took incredible pride every time I pulled on this shirt, to lead the team, to represent this institution, the biggest club in the world was an honour only bestowed upon a few lucky footballers.” Part of David de Gea’s farewell message on Twitter reads.
It is understood that an agreement had been reached between de Gea and Manchester United over a new contract. However, things changed and both parties stepped back to reflect on the situation before today’s announcement. The 32-year-old Spain international believes it is the right time for him to try a new challenge elsewhere.
Man United manager Erik ten Hag has thanked de Gea for his service for the club over the years.
“I am personally grateful for the 25 clean sheets he helped provide last season and his overall contribution on the pitch during my first year at the club. All the players and staff send him our very best wishes for the next phase of his outstanding career.” Erik ten Hag told club media, as per 90min.
Manchester United remain in dialogue with Serie A side Inter Milan as they try to agree on Andre Onana‘s transfer. Meanwhile, de Gea has been linked with a move to Saudi Pro League and it wouldn’t be a surprise if he joins one of the Saudi clubs this summer.
David de Gea began his football career at Atletico Madrid and joined Manchester United in 2011 for 18.9 million euros. During his time with the Red Devils, de Gea won the Premier League, FA Cup, UEFA Europa League and two Carabao Cups.
Some of his individual awards include Manchester United Player of the Year four times and the Premier League Golden Glove. He won the Golden Glove last season after keeping 17 clean sheets.
