Daniel Bryan began his wrestling journey on the independent circuit in 1999. He would later sign a contract with World Wrestling Federation (WWF, now WWE) in 2000 and was assigned to their developmental system Memphis Championship Wrestling (MCW).
WWE released Daniel Bryan in 2001 after which, he joined New Japan Pro-Wrestling. During his three years in Japan, he achieved success in both singles and tag team competitions. On 12 March 2004, he won the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Tag Team Championship.
Daniel Bryan made uncontracted appearances in WWE in 2002, the same year he joined Ring of Honor. He wrestled in the main event of ROH’s first event, The Era of Honor Begins. During his time with the promotion, he won the ROH World Championship and ROH Pure Championship.
