Brian Lara began playing cricket as a small boy after his father and one of his older sisters enrolled him in the local Harvard Coaching Clinic. He began receiving weekly coaching sessions when he was just six years old.
Lara had his breakthrough in cricket in 1987 when he scored 498 runs while in the West Indies Youth Championships. He broke the record of 480 runs which had been set by Carl Hooper the previous year. Lara was the captain of Trinidad and Tobago as they won the tournament.
In January 1988, Lara made his first-class debut for Trinidad and Tobago in a match against Leeward Islands. Afterwards, he got his first selection for the full West Indies team. He captained a West Indies B Team in 1989 and scored 145 against Zimbabwe.
