Nkoulou began his career at Kadji Sports Academy in Douala and it was announced that he was acquired by the principal performance-based side AS Monaco agreeing to a three-year professional contract with the club.

He joined and spent the season playing for Monaco’s CFA squad before joining the squad for preseason where he was handed the number 3 kit.

He performed impressively well at Monaco which led him to be scouted by several prominent European clubs, making 78 appearances though he was yet to score a goal.

After passing a medical, the player was signed by Marseille on a four-year contract for a fee of $3.8 million. At this time, Marseille and Lyon were competing over their interest in signing him before he chose Marseille.

Nkoulou made his debut for Marseille in a draw against Auxerre. Unfortunately, he was involved in an incident that saw him receive a three-match ban. After his return to the first team, he helped them win the cup for their first piece of silverware.

His dedication was too much even when the club suffered some financial shortages and he stuck with them regardless of the situation even extending his contract further, being appointed as the team’s captain in the absence of their own.

After five years of loyalty at Marseille, the player moved to Lyons on a four-year contract where his main intention was to achieve greater things and was handed shirt number 3.

In his first match against his former club Marseille, he received boos from the club’s supporters every time he touched the ball. His performance soon came under criticism by supporters though his manager defended him.

One year later, he moved to Italian club Torino on a year-long loan with a purchase option, making his debut in the Coppa Italia against Trapani, won by Torino. He scored his first goal for the club during a draw against Atalanta.

At the end of the season, he was voted by the fans as the best player for the club and his contract was redeemed for $3.8 million by the club. The contracts have seen his net worth grow in a very big way.

Upon the expiry of his contract with Torino, he parted ways with Watford as a free agent on a deal until the end of the season. However, the club was relegated and they released him.

The player was included in the Cameroon U-23 squad that participated in the 2008 Summer Olympics helping the squad reach the knockout round, though they were eliminated by Brazil.

He made his international debut for the senior squad in a friendly match against South Africa losing to them. He played in two FIFA World Cups and one Africa Cup of Nations final.
