  • Inter Milan goalkeeper and Chelsea target Andre Onana has been mentioned by United as De Gea’s successor

Manchester United is facing the increasing likelihood of goalkeeper David de Gea leaving the club as his contract expires at the end of June. In preparation for this possibility, the Red Devils are actively pursuing a move for Inter’s Andre Onana.

While negotiations with De Gea for a new contract were previously underway and close to an agreement, the situation has taken a turn. De Gea had rejected a lucrative move to Saudi Arabia earlier in June in order to focus on finalizing the details of a new contract at Old Trafford. However, it now appears that he is more inclined to leave United at the end of the month.

In light of these developments, Manchester United has begun exploring the goalkeeper market for potential alternatives. Porto’s Diogo Costa and Brentford’s David Raya are among the targets being considered. Another name that has emerged is Andre Onana, who previously worked with United manager Erik ten Hag during their time together at Ajax. Recent reports suggest that talks have taken place between the club and Onana’s representatives.

In their pursuit of Onana, Manchester United has also been in contact with Inter. The Italian club has indicated that a total fee of €60 million would be required to secure the goalkeeper’s services during this transfer window. Chelsea had previously engaged in discussions with Inter over Onana but were deterred by the high asking price.

If Manchester United proceeds with a move for Onana, it would represent a significant shift in their summer transfer plans. Initially, they had relied on De Gea remaining with the club and then signing a more affordable alternative to provide competition for the starting position. However, if the 32-year-old Spanish goalkeeper departs, United will be compelled to invest in a ready-made replacement.

Earlier reports had suggested that United had hoped young goalkeeper Matej Kovar, who impressed during a loan spell at Sparta Prague, would offer the necessary competition for De Gea. However, sources have revealed that United had also been monitoring Empoli goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario during certain periods of last season. Nevertheless, Vicario appears destined to join Premier League rivals Tottenham.

As the transfer window progresses, Manchester United finds itself at a crossroads in terms of their goalkeeping situation. The potential departure of De Gea necessitates careful consideration and swift action to secure a suitable replacement. United will need to assess their options and make strategic moves to ensure they have a competent and capable goalkeeper to maintain stability in their squad.
