- Leeds United have confirmed the exit of manager Sam Allardyce from the recently relegated club
- Leeds finished 19 in the 2022/23 Premier League season and were relegated back to the Championship
- Allardyce coached Leeds for barely a month leading the touchline for four PL matches
Leeds United have confirmed that Sam Allardyce will be leaving the club as manager by mutual agreement. Allardyce, aged 68, was appointed in a last-ditch effort to prevent Leeds from being relegated from the Premier League, but unfortunately, he was unable to achieve this with only four games remaining in the season.
The club released a statement stating that both parties have agreed for Allardyce’s tenure at Leeds to come to an end at the conclusion of the 2022-23 season. Despite spirited performances against Manchester City and Newcastle United, Leeds fell short of their objective to stay in the Premier League.
Allardyce had previously mentioned that he would discuss with the club whether to continue in the role after the season ended. However, he has now confirmed that he cannot commit to a “long-term project” as Leeds aims to regain their place in the top flight.

Expressing his gratitude, Allardyce said it had been an honour to manage Leeds United, praising the club and its passionate fan base. He also acknowledged the hard work of his assistants, Karl Robinson and Robbie Keane, during his short time at the club. Allardyce emphasized that at this stage of his career, he is uncertain about taking on a potentially long-term project but wished the club success in the future and hopes they return to the Premier League.
Leeds had turned to Allardyce after parting ways with Javi Gracia in the previous month. Gracia’s tenure lasted just 10 weeks and 12 games before he was replaced by Allardyce. Upon Allardyce’s arrival, Leeds was positioned 17th in the table, outside the relegation zone on goal difference.
Unfortunately, Leeds suffered a defeat in Allardyce’s first game against Manchester City, followed by a commendable 2-2 draw against Newcastle. However, they ultimately lost their top-flight status after consecutive defeats against West Ham and Tottenham by scores of 3-1 and 4-1 respectively.
Leeds CEO Angus Kinnear expressed gratitude to Allardyce for his efforts in trying to save the club. Despite the outcome, Kinnear acknowledged Allardyce, Karl Robinson, and Robbie Keane for their contributions to boosting morale at Thorp Arch and Elland Road.
Leeds has indicated that they plan to announce their new head coach in the coming weeks.
