Gor Mahia, Tusker FC jostle for FKF PL title on final day

  • Gor Mahia lead the standings with a single point
  • They play City Stars in Nairobi
  • Tusker play Vihiga Bullets in Mumias and hope for a Gor loss

Defending champions Tusker FC and record winners Gor Mahia battle for the FKF Premier League title as the season comes to a close on Sunday

One point separates the two sides on top of the log, Gor sitting top with 67 points while Tusker are second with 66. Heading into the final round of matches, fate is in Gor Mahia’s hands as they only need to win to reclaim the title from Tusker.

Gor Mahia will be playing City Stars at the Moi Sports Centre Kasarani, while Tusker FC will be away to already relegated Vihiga Bullets in Mumias.

After failing to take advantage of Gor Mahia’s defeat to Kakamega Homeboyz last weekend, Tusker FC are now left to depend on City Stars to beat Gor and they beat Vihiga for them to clinch the title.

If Gor drop points against City Stars and Tusker win, then the record champions will retain their crown.

We know it will be a tough game

“We know it will be a tough game and we have no choice but to win. We cannot control much but we will only control what we can and that is to go down there and win against Vihiga,” said Tusker captain Humphrey Mieno.

His sentiments were shared by defender Daniel Sakari. “We will keep on clinging to hope while doing our best to win. It is a disappointment we couldn’t win against Posta and now we have to keep hope alive.” He said.

Tusker beat Bullets 2-0 when they met in the first leg in Nairobi, and the stakes are even higher this time round.

Meanwhile, Gor, who beat City Stars 1-0 in the first leg, will have to win, but the memories of 2012 when they were in a similar situation, will linger in their minds.

During that year, fate was in their hands against Thika United but they were held to a draw, with Tusker winning against City Stars in Kawangware to clinch the title.

McKinstry hoping for the best

Coach Jonathan McKinstry hopes lightning does not strike at the same place again.

“We know that we made some mistakes against Kakamega and we have worked on them. We will go into the match with fate in our hands and that means we will be calmer and more relaxed. But we know we are playing against a tough team and we have to give our best,” said Jonathan McKinstry, the Gor Mahia coach.

This will be the biggest point opf focus on Sunday, with the battle for relegation already done and dusted.
