  • Yanga are set to earn a minimum of Sh137.7mn
  • Simba reached the quarter final of the Champions League
  • CAF increased the prize money of interclub competitions by 40pc

Tanzanian giants Yanga are set for a massive payday after their qualification to the final of the CAF Confederation Cup.

With the Confederation of African Football (CAF) having announced a 40pc increase in its prize money structure, Yanga, who have made their first ever final in the Confederation Cup, are guaranteed at least Sh137.7mn.

This is the money that is set to be awarded to the losing finalist. If they make it one better and go on to clinch the title, Wanajangwani will bank home a whooping Sh275.3mn (2mn USD), the prize money for winners.

Starting this season, teams that make the group stages are guaranteed USD400,000 (Sh55.1mn). This is the money paid out to the third and fourth place finishers.

Those who make the quarter finals, the first and second in the group, earn USD550,000 (Sh75.8mn) while the semi-finalists each earn USD750,000 (Sh103.2mn).

Simba also set for big payday in Champions League

The awards are even bigger in the Champions League where their arch nemesis Simba SC reached the quarter finals.

Wekundu wa Msimbazi are set to bank a total of Sh123.9mn (900,000USD) for reaching the last eight where they lost on penalties to defending champions Wydad Athletic Club.

Teams that qualify for the group stages of the Champions League are guaranteed at least 700,000 USD, equivalent to approximately Sh96.4mn. This is the amount teams that finish in third and fourth and fail to make it to the quarters will earn.

Uganda’s Vipers SC which reached the group stages for the first time ever and finished bottom in their group, will thus walk home with Sh96.4mn, a huge return on their investment to make it to the round of best 16.

Those that make the semis will each bank a whooping USD1.2mn, equivalent to Sh1565.2mn.

The winners of the title are guaranteed a prize money of USD4mn, equivalent to Sh550mn while the losing finalist will bank USD2mn, equivalent to Sh275.3mn.

This season, no Kenyan club has participated in continental football due to Kenya’s suspension by FIFA when the tournament started. Tusker FC would have played in the CAF Champions League.

Tusker, Gor fail to make group stages previously

Gor Mahia celebrate their late winner

In the previous 2021-22 season, both Tusker and Gor Mahia reached the play-off round of the CAF Confederation Cup.

The Champions League has two stages; preliminary and first round, to reach the group stages. In the CAF Confederation Cup, there’s an additional first round where teams who have lost in the first round of the Champions League are paired against teams who won their first round in the Confederation Cup.

This means the CAF Champions League has two rounds before the group phase while the confederation Cup has three.

Kenyan clubs have struggled for success in Continental football and the last team to make the money bracket was Gor in 2018, when they played in the group phase of the CAF Confederation Cup.

With Kenya’s suspension lifted, local teams will play Continental football next season. Tusker FC and Gor Mahia are in a neck to neck chase in the Premier League whose winner plays in the Champions League while the winner of the FKF Cup will play in the Confederation Cup.

The FKF Cup is currently in the semi-final stage.
