Tusker narrowly beat Sharks to move top of FKF PL

  • Deogratious Ojok scored the lone goal
  • Tusker moved to 64 points top of the log
  • There are four rounds of matches left

Tusker FC moved to the top of the FKF Premier League standings after a hard earned 1-0 win over Kariobangi Sharks at the Nyayo National stadium on Saturday. Ugandan Deogratious Ojok scored the lone goal in the second minute of the game as the brewers went to 64 points, one ahead of Gor Mahia, with four rounds of matches left.

Tusker’s coach Robert Matano was delighted with the result and says his team will keep fighting as they keep their eyes on the crown.

“It was a very difficult match but I am glad we won. It was very important for us to pick the three points because we know where we are headed as Tusker. We want to keep winning our matches and hope everything else goes in our favour. But we cannot depend on other teams. Fate is in our hands,” Matano said after the match.

His opposite number William Muluya was left ruing missed chances, as they went for yet another game without victory.

“It is the same problem we have had for most of the second leg. We dominate matches, create chances but can’t score. It is something we need to improve on as we look to end the season on a high,” Muluya noted.

Ojok scores after just two minutes

Ojok scored the game’s only goal after just two minutes on the clock when he slid in to connect to a well weighted cross from Levin Odhiambo on the left.

But, despite conceding early, Sharks quickly got their feet back together and slowly started dominating the brewers, keeping possession well and trying to penetrate their backline.

They had a good chance to draw back level after 13 minutes when Fortune Omotto broke into the box from the right, but his shot with space ahead of him was well collected by keeper Brian Bwire.

The game was a contest mostly in the middle of the pack and the brewers had to wait until the last five minutes of the half before they created any other chances. In the 40th minute, Mike Oduor picked up a lose ball on the left, but his curling effort went wide.

Two minutes to the break, an error at the back for Sharks saw Eric Zakayo picking up the ball after keeper Gideon Ogweno had clashed with his own defender. However, the Tusker winger placed his effort wide.

Sharks pressure in the second half

In the second half, Sharks started with pace as they looked to claw back into contention. Substitute Shariff Musa who had come on at the start of the second half came close but his shot from inside the box went wide.

On the other end, Tusker and Ojok should have had the second goal. The Ugandan battled his way into the box, but his eventual shot at goal was wild and over.

Tusker had to play the final 10 minutes of the game with 10 men after midfielder David Odoyo was sent off for a second bookable offense. At the stroke of 90 minutes, substitute Shami Kibwana thought he had wrapped up the game with a second goal, but it was ruled out for offside.

However, the brewers held on for the three vital points.
