Tusker keep double chase as Ingwe try to secure first trophy in six years

• Tusker are in the running for both the Cup and League title

Action in the local football scenes switches to the FKF Cup this weekend, with the semi-final fixtures set to light up the Nyayo National Stadium.

Double-seeking Tusker FC will face off with Ulinzi Stars in the early kick off while AFC Leopards take on Kakamega Homeboyz in the late kick off.

Tusker are seeking to win the double once again, after doing so in 2016 when they clinched both the league and cup honors. This season once again, they are leading the FKF Premier League standings with four matches to go and are in the last four of the Cup.

Head coach Robert Matano believes that this is a possibility and is arming up his charges to go all out and make another piece of history against Ulinzi, the side they beat in the final to win the Cup in 2016.

“I believe everything is possible and as a team we are working towards that. We are giving our best to ensure that we try to win the game. Of course it will not be easy because Ulinzi is a good team and they are tough. They also want to win something this season and will come hard at us,” the tactician stated.

Soldiers out of league contention

The soldiers are out of contention in the league and the Cup is their only solace. This will make them hungrier coming into the game.

However, with reports that head coach Bernard Mwalal has resigned and will leave the club after the Tusker game, the team seems to be in an unstable state. They lost 3-0 to Bidco on Monday in a league fixture, while Tusker beat Kariobangi Sharks 1-0 in their last assignment.

The two sides have met twice in the league, each ending in a draw. They drew 0-0 in the first leg while the second leg ended 2-2, with Tusker having to come from two goals down.

One player they should be wary of heading to the semi-final is their former forward Boniface Muchiri, who has crossed over to the military side. Muchiri had both assists when they last met and he will be looking to hurt his former employers once again.

“It will be a tough match and I am looking forward to it. As a team we have prepared well and looking forward to getting a good result,” he added.

Meanwhile in the late kick off, AFC Leopards will take on Kakamega Homeboyz. The two sides have become fierce rivals and the match comes just weeks after their league fixture in Kakamega was abandoned midway into the first half due to crowd trouble.

But, the meeting on Saturday will be even more crucial as it gives either team an opportunity for a title and continental football. Leopards last won the title in 2017 with current Tusker coach Matano at the helm when they beat Kariobangi Sharks 2-0.

They are keen to quench that title thirst, with the league now out of their reach.
