A year later, Brighton and Hove Albion made a bid for him on a reported fee of $8.7 million plus a possible amount in bonus of $1.1 million to Angers.

Villareal signed Toko at a fee of $21.7 million, coming in as a replacement for Cedrick Bakambu who left for the Chinese Super League. He did very well at the Club and even became the La Liga Player of the Month.

Toko moved back to Ligue 1 on a loan at Club Lyon and in a few months, he was signed up permanently on a transfer of four years at a fee of $12.5 million. He played in the 2020 Coupe de la Ligue Final which became the last game in the competition’s history.
