He was born on August 12, 1997, in Ilorin, Kwara state, Nigeria. He is the son of Solomon Awoniyi who is a retired police officer, and Mary Motunrayo Awoniyi. He is a twin brother to his sister Kehinde and has a brother by the name Victor.
As a kid, he had so much interest in football but his parents were against it since they wanted him to study medicine. He is married to Taiye Jesudun and is blessed with a baby Emmanuel Awoniyi. They are strong Christian believers.
Career
Awoniyi enrolled at the Imperial Soccer Academy in Ogun State, graduating in 2012. He played for Nigeria’s National U-15 side and played at the CopaCocacola in London. The Union Berlin forward played at the FIFA U-17 World Cup in 2013, scoring four goals to help Nigeria get the title. He also played a very vital role in Nigeria’s U20 team, at the U20 World Cup tournament in 2015.
Awoniyi signed for club Liverpool at a fee of about $496,074 and within no time, he was loaned to German team FSV Frankfurt. In his debut at Frankfurt, he came in as a substitute in a match against Hertha Berlin.
He was a substitute for six league matches, going under relegation with Frankfurt, and returning to his former club Liverpool. In 2016, he was confirmed to have joined a Dutch Club NEC on a season-long loan, expected to join the squad the week after, once his working permit was processed.
He made a debut for NEC losing to Eredivisie, being replaced by Michael Heinloth in the 72nd minute, and suffering another relegation from Eredivisie in 2017. In mid-July, he left NEC joining Belgian club Royal Excel Mouscron on a long-season loan.
On July 2017, he signed a long-term deal with Liverpool and a few days later, he sealed another season-long loan to a Belgian club Gent. In January 2019, his loan to Gent was dismissed and loaned to Moscow again. His struggle to get a UK work permit bore no fruits and without it, his career at Liverpool was no more.
A month after, Liverpool confirmed his joining Bundesliga side Mainz 05 on a season-long loan. However, he was hospitalized after sustaining a severe concussion during a League which they lost to FC Augsburg.
Three months after recovery, he joined Union Berlin for one year on a loan. After a few months in the club, he secured a permanent basis at Club Berlin receiving a fee of $8.1 million, Liverpool asked for a 10% sell-on clause in this deal.
