Sevilla won the Europa League and earned a spot in the Champions League for the upcoming season by defeating Roma on penalties after a 1-1 draw.
Gianluca Mancini’s own goal and Paulo Dybala’s opening goal kept the two sides tied after 120 minutes of play, but Sevilla prevailed in the shootout thanks to a goal from Gonzalo Montiel on the second attempt.
Roma’s first opportunity in the championship came in the 11th minute when Bono made a deft stop on Leonardo Spinazzola after some deft work from Dybala and Zeki Celik resulted in him getting a shot on goal.
Early on, Sevilla had an advantage in possession of the ball, but Roma was clearly a threat on the break, and in the 12th minute, Bono had to leave his goal to clear the ball before Tammy Abraham.
When Nemanja Gudelj’s challenge on Abraham resulted in a foul, Roma immediately demanded a penalty; however, both the referee and VAR decided that play should continue.

Three minutes later, the breakthrough was made, and it was Dybala who scored after receiving an exquisite pass from Mancini before scoring.
In the 52nd minute, Alex Telles narrowly missed the goal, and the La Liga team subsequently managed to tie the score three minutes later. The hosts were much improved at the start of the second half.

Jesus Navas completed a deft team play with a dangerous cross into the penalty area, and the ball rebounded off Mancini and into the Roma goal for a 1-1 tie.

In the 67th minute, Abraham could have given Roma the lead again after receiving a tackle inside the penalty area. However, the striker managed to shoot straight at Bono, and the rebound was deflected wide by Roger Ibanez.
The Italian team’s bench was furious after the referee rejected Roma’s appeal for a penalty when Spinazzola’s strike struck Fernando in the arm. Later, Andrea Belotti had an attempt from inside the box deflected by Bono and hit the post.
Chris Smalling’s late extra-time header struck the Sevilla crossbar, but neither team contributed enough in the additional 30 minutes to merit victory in that manner. As a result, the outcome of the tiresome match was decided by a penalty shootout.
Prior to Bryan Cristante tying the score, Ocampos gave Sevilla the lead in the penalty shootout. Erik Lamela then made it 2-1 for the Spanish team with a brilliant penalty into the bottom corner.
Mancini’s attempt was thwarted by Bono’s legs before Rakitic gave Sevilla a 3-1 lead. Ibanez then missed a penalty opportunity for Roma by hitting the post, giving Sevilla a chance to win the match. Montiel’s initial penalty attempt was saved, but a retake was mandated by VAR, and he scored on the second attempt to secure a 4-1 victory in the shootout.
