Former Chicago Bulls player Scottie Pippen sparked a fierce debate after asserting that Michael Jordan played badly in his earlier days.
Pippen played with Jordan back in the day and, together, they won six NBA titles. Jordan’s stellar NBA career was covered in The Last Dance, a 2020 Netflix.
“I seen Michael Jordan play before I came to play with the Bulls. You guys seen him play…he was a horrible player. He was horrible to play with. He was all one-on-one, he’s shooting bad shots, and all of a sudden we become a team and we start winning. Everybody forgot who he was,” Pippen remarked.
He spoke at Gimme the Hot Sauce podcast and it sparked uproar online considering tht that Jordan won many awards before Pippen.
One of those include the NBA Rookie of the Year and NBA All-Star, The fact that Jordan won the NCAA National Championship with the Tar Heels and went on to have a distinguished college career must also irked many people.
Pippen added that he is not planning on talking to Jordan ever again. His frosty relationship with Jordan could be from an affair his ex-wife Larsa Pippen has with Jordan’s son Marcus Jordan.
Pippen wedded Larsa in 1997 and they got four children together but he filed for a divorce in 2016 after 19 years of marriage.
He filed the application after two voice recordings of Larsa calling the police to report that him for verbal abuse surfaced.
In an interview with PEOPLE, Fort Lauderdale police said that they visited the estranged couple’s home twice in the week which Pippen finally filed for divorce.
They tried to work things out for the next two years but it became impossible forcing Larsa to file for a final divorce in 2018 citing irreconcilable differences.
Jordan is largely recognised as the best basketball player in league history. He won six titles with the Chicago Bulls after 15 seasons in the NBA,
He signed with the Bulls in 1984 as the third overall draught pick and quickly became a star in the league.
With a peak viewership of 29 million per game in 1998, he took part in four of the NBA Finals with the best ratings ever. Viewership of the Finals fell by 45% after he permanently retired from the Chicago Bulls which is one of the reasons NBA fans can’t understand Pippen’s remarks.
Jordan won numerous awards during his career, including the NBA Most Valuable Player Award, the Best NBA Player ESPY Award, and the NBA Defensive Player of the Year Award, to name just a few.
In addition, he is among the richest NBA players in history with a massive following. According to Forbes, Jordan his a $2 billion net worth in April 2023.
A huge stake of his wealth came through endorsements. He has made $1.7 billion (pre-tax) from brands like Nike, Coca-Cola, McDonald’s, Wheaties, Chevrolet, etc. over the course of more than four decades, and he continues to work with companies like Nike, Hanes, Gatorade, and Upper Deck.
