Manchester City defeated defending champion Real Madrid 4-0 in the second leg of their Champions League semifinal at the Etihad Stadium, securing their place in the final match for the title.

The tie was in a precarious position going into the game after a 1-1 draw in the first leg at the Bernabeu, but a first-half brace from Bernardo Silva, an own goal from Eder Militao in the second half, and a late goal from Julian Alvarez helped the Premier League champions win 5-1 aggregate.

Manchester City’s dominant start

Kyle Walker made the game’s opening attempt in the fourth minute, but the Man City right-back’s shot kept rising above the Real Madrid crossbar.

Erling Braut Haaland’s quickness allowed him to enter the Real Madrid box and get behind Thibaut Courtois in the seventh minute, giving the home team a chance, but no one connected on his low cross back into the middle of the field.

Haaland attempted to give Man City the lead in the 13th minute, but Courtois wonderfully stopped his close-range header after Jack Grealish sent a great cross.

Haaland’s header was blocked by Courtois in the 22nd minute, another incredible save, but Bernardo gave the home team the lead moments later.

Bernardo was sent free inside the Real Madrid box by a beautiful ball from De Bruyne, and he hammered his effort past the opposition goalkeeper to give Man City a 1-0 win and a 2-1 lead in the series.

Replays revealed that Ederson made the tiniest of touches to Toni Kroos’ spectacular shot from a distance that struck the crossbar in the 35th minute.

But in the 37th minute, Bernardo increased Man City’s advantage by directing a close-range header into the goal after Ilkay Gundogan’s blocked shot had dropped to the Portugal international.

The second half

Both teams had their chances as Ederson made a spectacular stop to deny David Alaba’s dipping free-kick early in the second half and Dani Carvajal was able to steal the ball away from Gundogan at the other end just as the German was about to have a clear shot on goal.

Eduardo Camavinga was able to go into midfield when Antonio Rudiger replaced Luka Modric because Real Madrid needed to score twice or more in the final 25 minutes to have a chance of reaching another final.

Then, as Ancelotti put in another goal scorer, Marco Asensio, Real Madrid had more of the possession in Manchester and Kroos was replaced.

In the 74th minute, Haaland‘s attempt was stopped by Courtois brilliantly and went over the crossbar, much to the dismay of the Norway international.

In the 76th minute, Man City had a third as Eder Militao put it in his own net.  Alvarez then put the game to bed, as he scored in stoppage time from a Foden pass, to seal the City win who will face Inter Milan in the final.
