Kelechi Iheanacho was born on October 3 1996 to Elder James Iheanacho and the late Mercy Iheanacho. He hails from Obogwe, Imo state in the Southeastern part of Nigeria, where he spent his childhood alongside his three siblings.
Throughout his childhood, he played on the streets with his peers making it evident that his destiny lies on the football field.
At 14 years, his mother who was a teacher passed away leaving him and his siblings under their father’s care, who was a trader in building materials.

Born in Owerri, he represented the youth at Taye Academy. He participated in the 2013 FIFA U-17 World Cup and his performance led to interest from clubs in Europe like Arsenal, Sporting CP and Porto.

In 2012, he travelled to England on a discussion of joining Manchester City, signing a pre-contract that stated his interest in formally joining the club on his 18th birthday and returned to Nigeria.
As the year approached it’s end, he was named the most promising talent of the year for the 2013 CAF Awards by the Confederation of African Football [CAF].
He joined Manchester City’s Academy in 2015 and was part of the club’s squad that visited United States for a pre-season tour. At the tour, he played and scored against Sporting Kansas City and also against Milan. As they concluded the tour, Manchester had seen a star in him and arranged for his training with Columbus Crew.
There was a delay in getting his work permit, that became a barrier for him to play in England. However, he made his debut in a UEFA Youth League in the U-19 level, in a match against Schalke 04 suffering an injury.
After recovery, he represented Manchester City at both youth and U-21 levels, playing in the FA Youth Cup final where they lost to Chelsea.
In season 2015-16, he was in the City’s pre-season tour in Australia, played at the 2015 international Champions Cup where he scored the second goal in a win against Roma. His performance saw him to a promotion to the Manchester City senior squad.
For a duration, he remained as unused substitute but later made a competitive debut as a replacement at the City of Manchester Stadium. He played at the FA Cup where he scored and also at the UEFA Champions League where he came in as a replacement for an injured teammate.
He ended the season with a record of 14 goals and 5 assists from 35 appearances ending the season at City as the third, highest scorer.
