Spanish-Venezuelan tennis player Garbine Muguruza is set to get married to her longtime boyfriend Arthur Borges.
The pair have been together for nearly two years after meeting at the 2021 US Open. She first saw him at the hotel and she immediately crushed on him.
Borges, was courteous to talk to her and a friendship developed.
“It was a crush. I went out of the hotel for a walk, I bumped into him, he turned around and wished me good luck. From then on, we connected and every day we went for walks in Central Park. Very romantic, really,” she tells Hola Magazine.
Borges proposed to her in Marbella and it was the most romantic thing she has had in life. It was strange and a proposal is the last thing she expected.

Muguruza couldn’t hold back tears of joy as all this happened and she said yes to marrying Borges.
“He asked me at the Marbella Club hotel, which is one of my favourite. He set up a little table for me under a tree and I said ‘What is this?’ It seemed strange to me, but I was thinking of something else, and when he asked me, I started to cry, I didn’t know how to react. I said ‘yes’ through tears of emotion and it was very romantic,” she recalls.
She now wants to get married to near a beach in Spain during the summer of 2024. A Spanish beach is home for her and it is the place she feels right committing her life to another man.
A beach in Spain has a uniting factor and it’s the only thing she is looking out for in her wedding.
The two-time Grand Slam winner and former world No.1 has taken a sabbatical from tennis until the end of the grass-court season.
She is off the WTA circuit and will not play in French Open and Wimbledon. It is likely she will return in August for the Hard Court season starting at the US Open.
Since losing 6-1, 6-4 to Linda Noskova at the Lyon tournament in February, Muguruza has not competed. She suffered four defeats in a row which broke her willpower thus, she decided to take a career break.
However, Muguruza defeated Despina Papamichail in the 2022 Tokyo Open in September, winning 6-4, 6-2.

But she couldn’t replicate this at the 2023 season start. Nevertheless, she is enjoying spending time with family and friends.
She needed such positive energy before she goes back to the circuit. The Spanish-speaking player notes it wasn’t easy making the decision but she had to.
Before taking a tennis break, Muguruza said she is learning to be modest and having fewer expectations to safeguard her mental well-being.
“I think experience helps me to stay calm in the not-so-good moments when I haven’t been playing as well or results haven’t followed. That’s where the experience comes in; to stay calm and keep working hard,” Tennis Major quotes her.
