Borussia Dortmund had a massive opportunity to win the title for the first time since 2011-12 but they let it slip following the 2-2 draw with Mainz. Dortmund needed to win their final match of the season to end Bayern’s record 10-year reign as champions.
The Dortmund players and fans were left dejected at full-time despite coming back from 2-0 after the break. It became the first team in 23 years that Dortmund squandered a lead on the last day.

How Bayern Munich Won The Bundesliga
Ahead of the final day, Bayern Munich were looking to become the first team to win the Bundesliga title having started the final day in second place since 1999-2000 when they beat Bayer Leverkusen to the crown. For that to happen, they needed to beat FC Koln and hope Dortmund fail to win against Mainz.
Well, Bayern showed their desire to win the title when they took an early lead against Koln after just eight minutes of play. It was Kingsley Coman, who has won a league title in every season as a professional footballer, who put the Bavarians in front.
News then filtered through the stands that Mainz had taken the lead against Borussia Dortmund at Signal Iduna Park. With the momentum now on Bayern’s side, Thomas Muller came close to adding another goal but his header rebounded off the post. Leroy Sane thought he had given his side a two-goal lead but his shot just clipped in off the inside of the post before the half time break.
On the other side, Borussia Dortmund were already trailing by two goals, with Sebastian Haller failing to convert a penalty in the 19th minute. Dortmund put on a spirited fight after the break and they managed to pull one back in the 69th minute through Raphael Guerreiro.
The momentum suddenly swung their way after FC Koln converted a penalty in the 81st minute to level the scores against Bayern Munich. However, Jamal Musiala’s stunning goal in the dying minutes of the game put Bayern back on top of the Bundesliga standings.
Niklas Sule leveled the scores for Borussia Dortmund but that was not enough as they needed to beat Mainz to win the title. The famous “Yellow Wall” stand stayed after the final whistle to show appreciation to their team for the spirited fight they had put on even though they let the Bundesliga title slip on final day.
