Anthony Kimani has been fired as the Bandari FC head coach following the team’s elimination from the FKF Cup on Sunday. The Mombasa-based side lost 3-0 to AFC Leopards at the Kasarani Stadium, ending their only hope for a trophy this season.

This was the second time in a span of three days that they were losing by three goals, having been thrashed 3-0 at their Mombasa backyard by Kenya Police FC in a league fixture last Wednesday.

“The Board of Trustees arrived at this decision after thorough deliberations. We would like to sincerely thank Anthony Kimani for his service and dedication to the club during his tenure as our Head Coach. We wish him all the best in his future endeavors,” a statement from the dockers read.

Kimani had been in charge of the team for the last two and a half seasons, having been handed the role after the sacking of his predecessor Andre Cassa Mbungo. He had been Mbungo’s assistant before taking over the job permanently.

However, he has had an up and down run with the team. Having been able to resuscitate it following a poor start to the season, fortunes seemed to be going against the former Mathare United captain in the last few matches. Bandari are currently placed sixth in the standings with 40 points, a massive 19 adrift leaders Gor Mahia.

For the remaining eight matches of the season, the team will be under the tutelage of the experienced Twahir Muhiddin who has been the side’s technical director.

Muhiddin is no stranger to the role having been in the Bandari ranks for close to two decades, and has been often called in as a temporary replacement once they sack coaches.

Elsewhere, Mathare United have appointed Charles ‘Korea’ Omondi as the club’s new head coach, replacing Sammy Koko who has been holding brief in acting capacity.

After what looked like a resurgence towards the end of the first leg, Mathare have slumped again and are third from bottom, the danger of relegation lurking on their shoulders again.

Omondi joins from Posta Rangers, where he had been John Kamau’s assistant.

Koko will now revert to his full time role as a goalkeeper trainer, while also doubling up as Omondi’s assistant.

“Omondi helped lay the foundation for our promotion to the Kenyan Premier League 25 years ago as he was part of the squad that won the 1998 Moi Golden Cup. He also coached the club in the infancy stages of his coaching career between 2014 and 2015 serving as an assistant to Stanley Okumbi,” a statement from Mathare read.

He returns to try and preserve our three-decade stay in the top flight with the club hovering at the wrong end of the league table. The Slumboys are currently 16th in the standings with 22 points, four adrift of safety with eight matches left to play.

Omondi has coached Nzoia Sugar in the KPL and Nairobi Stima in the National Super League (NSL). He has also served as an assistant at Kariobangi Sharks, KCB, Sony Sugar and Posta Rangers with the latter being his immediate workstation.

His first task in charge will be against league leaders Gor Mahia this Wednesday at the MISC, Kasarani.
