Early life
Bounou’s parents are Moroccan, and he was born in Montreal, Quebec. His father is a native of Taounate. When Bounou was 3 years old, his family relocated to Casablanca, Morocco. When he was a young child, he used to play in the streets, and in 1999, when he was 8 years old, he joined Wydad AC. He preferred playing with his feet, but because of his height, it was later advised that he switch to goalkeeping, which he embraced as a challenge. Gianluigi Buffon and Edwin van der Sar were his idols in goal.
When he was 17 years old, a scout from OGC Nice noticed his goalkeeping abilities and he signed with the team. However, owing to administrative issues, he was unable to play for Nice and went back to Wydad AC.

Later, in 2012–2013, he switched over to the Atlético Madrid B squad. He was elevated to the Atlético Madrid senior team as a result of his performance before leaving on loan to Real Zaragoza.
Due to Girona offering him a contract, Bono’s loan spells at Zaragoza were quite brief.
Bounou and Girona agreed to a two-year, permanent contract on July 12, 2016. He participated in exactly half of the games in his first campaign.
He assisted in Girona’s promotion from Segunda División to La Liga.
After assisting Girona in joining La Liga, he later received a loan to Sevilla. He was a loan player at Sevilla, but his performance there was so strong that Sevilla made him the team’s #1 goalie permanently.
Bounou and the Andalusians agreed to a permanent, four-year agreement on September 4, 2020. He scored his first goal as a professional goalkeeper on March 21 of that year, in the waning seconds of a game against Real Valladolid, to keep a 1-1 tie.
Bounou had the most clean sheets of any goalkeeper in the top five divisions in Europe in 2021, keeping 32 in 59 outings for club and country.

Bounou had the option of representing Morocco or Canada but chose the latter. He participated in one game with the under-20 team in the 2012 Toulon Tournament.
He was picked for the 18-man under-23 team for the 2012 Summer Olympics, but he was switched out for Mohamed Asif during the competition. On August 14, 2013, Bounou was called up to the starting lineup for a game against Burkina Faso. In addition, he was chosen to play for Morocco in the 23-man roster for the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
He was then selected for Morocco’s team for the Africa Cup of Nations 2021, which will be played on January 6, 2022.
In the round of 16 penalty shootout against Spain, he made two saves, ensuring Morocco advanced to the quarterfinals for the first time in their history. There, they defeated Portugal 1-0 to become the first African team to get to the semifinals.
