Tusker seek Police scalp in crucial league duel

  • Tusker lost 3-0 to Police when the two sides met in the first leg
  • They will move a point close to leaders Gor with a win
  • Police are also seeking to move up the table

FKF Premier League champions Tusker FC will take on Kenya Police FC in a crucial tie, with the league champions knowing only too well how vital the three points are for them.

The brewers are only four points behind leaders Gor Mahia and a win against Police will squeeze the gap to a single point pending Gor’s match on Sunday.

Coach Robert Matano says the team is upbeat of a win.

“We have to be ready for them. It will be a tough match but we will fight to get all points. They beat us in the first leg and we have to ensure we make a response. The fixture is really tight with matches every three days but we have to be ready. It is the situation we find ourselves in,” noted the coach.

Tusker is on a run of five consecutive wins across all competitions, with one in the FKF Cup and four in the league.

Police, placed fifth in the standings, have won two of their last five and drawn three. Their last match in midweek was a 4-2 victory over Nairobi City Stars.

This will be the fourth league meeting between these two sides, since Police were promoted to the Premier League last season.

The 3-0 win in the first leg was the law enforcers’ first victory over Tusker. Last season, the brewers won the first leg 2-1 and the second leg ended in a 1-1 draw.

Meanwhile, the duo of Rodgers Ouma and Stewart Omondi have said the team has to give its best against Police FC, in the race towards ensuring the team defends its league title.

Omondi says the team is still pained from the first leg 3-0 defeat, but reckons they have learnt from the past mistakes and will be ready to make amends.

“We picked out what we did wrong in that game and the lessons have come in handy. We have prepared well for the game and we have to be ready for them. It will not be easy but we have to fight for the three points,” Stewart says.

Rodgers adds on; “Everyone knows how important this game is to the team and we will be there to put in our best. We are psyched and ready.”

Tusker will be boosted with the availability of forwards Shami Kibwana and Deogratious Ojok, adding to their offensive firepower for the game. The two have been injured and their return will be apt for the reigning champions.

Police meanwhile are keen to get their title credentials back on track, their performance over the last seven games having dragged them a few paces behind.

They are 12 points behind the leaders, but three points against the holders will be crucial for them to show intent and keep pace.
