Tusker floor Wazito to move top of FKF Premier League log

TUsker FC players celebrate their win over Wazito
  • Tusker beat Wazito 2-0 at Ruaraka
  • They have now moved to 54 points on top of the table
  • There are nine rounds of matches left

Tusker FC stormed back to the apex of the FKF Premier League standings after beating Wazito FC 2-0 at their Ruaraka Complex backyard. Goals from Eric Otieno and Lawrence Luvanda in the first half helped the team secure victory against the relegation fighting Muhoroni and move a point above leaders Gor Mahia.

Tusker are now on 54 points, Gor second on 53, with the two teams having now played an equal number of matches.

Tusker’s head coach Robert Matano was delighted with the results, but was left dejected with the performance especially in the second half.

“It was good we got three points but we wasted a lot of chances. Also in the second half, we didn’t control the tempo of the game well. The people who came in couldn’t stamp their authority and we didn’t posess the ball as we always do,” the tactician added.

Meanwhile, Wazito’s Charles Odero rued mistakes at the back that cost them but said they will fight to the end to ensure they survive relegation.

Better in the second half

“We were better in the second half but we were not clinical infront of goal. We will keep fighting to ensure that we are not relegated. I am sure with the players that we have we can turn this around. We just need to be more aggressive infront of goal,” added the coach.

They found themselves trailing 2-0 inside the first half an hour of the game.

Tusker just needed 12 minutes to break the deadlock, Otieno scoring his third goal of the season with a thumping header from inside the box after Lawrence Luvanda’s delightful cross from the left.

Luvanda turned from provider to scorer in the 27th minute when he ran onto a Daniel Sakari pass before shooting low into the bottom right corner. Just before that, the winger had come close with a snap shot from the edge of the box which slid inches wide.

On the half hour mark, Otieno almost scored his second when he rose to glance home a cross from Shaphan Oyugi, but his header was blocked on the line by a defender’s foot.

Make changes to salvage situation

Seeing his side struggle and the possibility of a whitewash by the home side, Wazito coach Charles Odero made changes, pulling out goalkeeper Ezekiel Owade for Tom Muthomi.

They managed to stabilize a bit, with the brewers also being thrown off balance with the injury to Rodgers Ouma, who was replaced by David Odoyo.

In the second half Tusker seemed to lose a bit of their grip on the game as they struggled to cope with Wazito’s power play.

However, the latter couldn’t pose too much danger and Tusker managed to hold on well.

They had chances late on, with a Wazito defender almost scoring an own goal as he attempted to clear a Stewart Omondi cross but he was rescued by the crossbar.

Keeper Muthomi also made a fine save, pushing Shami Kibwana’s shot from the edge of the box against the upright.
