Pickford led England to the quarterfinal and semifinal of the 2011 FIFA Under-17 World Cup and the European Under-17 Championship, respectively, after playing for the England Under-16 team. In the World Cup’s pre-quarterfinal shootout against the Argentina Under-17 team, he saved two penalties.

The youngster from Washington eventually agreed to his first professional contract with Sunderland a year later. Even though Pickford made his senior debut in January 2016 and was loaned out six times, he spent a total of six years with Sunderland.
Pickford excelled despite Sunderland’s relegation from the Premier League in 2016–17. He put on a streak of exceptional performances and was named one of the six players on the PFA Young Player of the Year shortlist.
Pickford’s outstanding personal campaign earned him a £25 million transfer to Everton following the Black Cats’ relegation. At the time, Pickford was only 23 years old, making him the third most expensive goalkeeper in football history.
Pickford had a very successful first season on Merseyside. The goalkeeper was named the Toffees’ Player of the Season in addition to winning the Players’ and Young Players’ Player of the Season honours.
He became the No. 1 keeper for the Three Lions at the 2018 World Cup in Russia due to a strong start to the season.
After the World Cup, the former Sunderland goalkeeper did see a drop in performance, and he received harsh media criticism for gravely hurting Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk during the Merseyside Derby. He has, however, maintained his top spot for both club and nation throughout.

Pickford made his youth team debut for the Three Lions in a match against Wales when he was 16 years old. Since then, he has played for every age bracket of the England national team, from under-16s to under-21s.
He played a significant role in the 2016 Toulon Tournament victory by England, the nation’s first in 22 years.
On August 24, 2017, Pickford earned his first senior international call-up; however, he was forced to leave the team after suffering an injury. The goalkeeper was later selected for the Three Lions’ 23-man World Cup 2018 roster and went on to start all seven of their matches there.
Despite his efforts for England, many in the media questioned whether Pickford should keep his spot on the national squad going into Euro 2020.
But Southgate still picked him and Pickford displayed why in the entire tournament, the former Sunderland goalkeeper conceded just two goals. Unfortunately, England lost to Italy in the final game.
He was recently selected for the Qatar 2022 World Cup which saw England get eliminated by the finalists, France.
