Gor Mahia FC players celebrate
  • Gor Mahia were the Cup defending champions
  • They lost away to Kakamega Homeboyz
  • Gor face Sofapaka in the league

Record FKF Premier League champions Gor Mahia have shifted their attention to the FKF Premier League after being dumped out of the FKF Cup. The Cup defending champions were eliminated following a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Kakamega Homeboyz at the Bukhungu Stadium.

Moses Mudavadi’s 53rd minute shot was deflected off a Gor Mahia defender’s head, a goal that proved to be vital for the Western Kenya side.

“A draw would have been a fair result but unfortunately that’s how football is. We conceded a deflected goal and it ended that way. Now we switch focus back to the league and see what we can do from that,” said Gor Mahia coach Jonathan McKinstry.

He now says they will use that disappointment to step up their hunt for the league title that has eluded them since the 2019-20 season.

Put all energy in the league

“We will now put all our energy in the league and hopefully we can do well there. We have no distractions and with a good squad, I believe we can achieve something great,” said the coach.

Gor currently lead the standings with 45 points, six ahead of second placed Tusker FC.

The tactician has been boosted with the ability to use all of his new signings after the lifting of a transfer embargo and Patrick Kaddu announced himself with a hattrick in their last match against Vihiga Bullets FC.

The likes of Emery Bayisenge and Shafick Kagimu will also be in line for more minutes when they take on Batoto ba Mungu.

Meanwhile, Homeboyz will be buoyed by that win over Gor and will look to translate that form into the league when they take on Posta Rangers in the early kick off at the Kasarani Annex.

Homeboyz under new coach

Homeboyz, under new coach Patrick Odhiambo are 11th in the standings and have not won in their last four matches, three of them being defeats.

They will be keen to bounce back and push up as they look to get into the top half of the league.

In the late kick off at the Annex, fifth placed KCB Who have only won once in their last five matches will be taking on Nairobi City Stars whose back to back wins have taken them off the relegation zone.

City Stars thrashed Mathare United 3-0 in their last match and will be buoyed for this fixture despite taking on a tougher opponent.

The bankers, who still remain with league winning ambitions have drawn back to back matches without scoring a goal.

They have also scored just two goals in their last five matches, a statistic that has proved to be a headache for coach Zedekiah Otieno.
A win for them will revive their hopes of a title as it will possibly move them to second spot if the teams above them drop points.
