  • Frank Lampard will serve as the interim manager of Chelsea
  • The club sacked former manager Graham Potter on Sunday
  • Lampard will serve until the end of the season

Frank Lampard will serve as the interim manager for Chelsea FC until the end of the season.

His appointment follows the sacking of immediate former manager Graham Potter who the club terminated his contract on Sunday.

Ironically, he is also a former manager at Stamford Bridge which sacked him in a similar style. Until this appointment, Lampard was jobless.

He served as the manager of Chelsea between July 2019 and January 2021. His exit saw the entry of German football manager Thomas Tuchel who was also sacked by the club in September 2022.

Tuchel was sacked by the new Chelsea owner Todd Boehly in a three-minute meeting. Lampard, 44, also had a short stint with Everton which also sacked him and left him with no job.

On Saturday, 11th-place Chelsea will travel to face Wolves in the Premier League.

Despite having spent more than £550 million on new players this season, they are 14 points behind fourth-placed Manchester United. But they have advanced to the quarterfinals of the Champions League and will play Real Madrid in the first leg on Wednesday next week.

Lampard, also a former EPL player will serve as interim manager while the team’s co-owners Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali complete their exhaustive process to recruit a permanent manager.

Boehly in a statement according to BBC Sports, appointed Lampard to fill a gap left by Potter which left the club unstable.  He exuded confidence in Lampard’s expertise to take Chelsea to the end of the season.

“We want to provide the club and our fans with a clear and stable plan for the remainder of the season,” he said.

“We want to give ourselves every chance of success and Frank has all of the characteristics and qualities we need to drive us to the finish line.”

During his last tenure as Chelsea manager, Lampard took over the team while they were subject to a transfer ban. He, however, managed to lead them to the FA Cup final in his first season and achieved a fourth-place result.

He was fired by previous owner Roman Abramovich with the team ninth in the Premier League, having won just two of their previous eight games.

This was after spending £200 million in the subsequent summer on seven significant signings, including current players Ben Chilwell and Kai Havertz.

But, even with these signings, Lampard could take the team to victory prompting the Russian oligarch to fire him.

His exit brought in Tuchel who steered the team to Champions League victory in 2021 in just months and from fourth place. In January 2022, Everton named Lampard the club’s manager barely a year after being sacked by Chelsea.

However, after nine losses in 12 Premier League games this season, he was fired eight days before his one-year anniversary as Everton manager.

Still, he saved the team from relegation even with nine losses out of 12 EPL games placed in the 2022/23 season.

Lampard attended Chelsea’s 0-0 draw match with Liverpool on Tuesday at Stamford Bridge.
