Pepe began his football journey in Brazil with local Corinthians Alagoano. After turning 18, he moved to Portugal alongside teammate Ezequias and joined Maritimo. He spent majority of the 2001-02 season with Maritimo B before being promoted to the main squad for the 2002-03 season.
Pepe went to train with Sporting CP for a short period during the 2002-03 season so that his transfer could be negotiated. However, the deal did not go through as both teams did not agree on the transfer fee.
The legendary defender secured a transfer to FC Porto in May 2004, shortly before Jose Mourinho led the team to winning the historic treble. During his first spell with Porto, Pepe helped the team win the Primeira Liga two times, Intercontinental Cup, Supertaca Candido de Oliveira and Taca de Portugal.
Pepe joined La Liga giants Real Madrid in the summer of 2007 for 30 million Euros. During his time with the Los Blancos, he played a massive role as the team won three UEFA Champions League titles and three La Liga titles, among others.
Besiktas signed Pepe in the summer of 2017 for a free transfer. He spent two seasons with the Turkish club before returning to his boyhood club FC Porto in 2019.
