Mateo Kovacic biography has it that he was born in Linz, Austria on 6 May 1994. His parents are Bosnian Croat who moved to Austria ahead of the Yugoslav Wars.
Kovacic’s mother was the brain behind discovering his talent. In the year 2000, Mateo Kovacic joined LASK Linz where his football journey began. 13-year-old Kovacic attracted the attention of scouts from several prominent clubs such as Ajax, Bayern Munich, Juventus and Inter Milan.
However, his family opted to move to Zagreb where the young footballer joined Croatian football powerhouse Dinamo Zagreb. In 2009, he suffered a serious injury and had to stay out for almost a whole year before returning to the pitch.
Career
Mateo Kovacic began training with Dinamo Zagreb senior team in October 2010. He made his debut the following month, scoring the fourth goal as his side demolished Hrvatski Dragovoljac 6-0 in the 2010-11 Prva HNL.
Kovacic spent three seasons with Dinamo Zagreb, winning the Prva HNL two times and the Croatian Cup twice. In January 2013, he transferred to Inter Milan for an initial 11 million Euros. The amount was to rise to 15 million if Inter Milan was to qualify for the Champions League.
Young Kovacic was given the number 10 jersey previously won by Wesley Sneijder. He would spend two seasons with the Italian giants before joining Real Madrid in the summer of 2015. Roberto Mancini, who was Inter Milan’s manager, said they had to sell Kovacic because of Financial Fair Play regulations.
Mateo Kovacic spent five seasons with Real Madrid, including a loan spell to Chelsea in 2018. During his time with the Spanish giants, he won a La Liga title, three Champions League titles, two UEFA Super Cups, two FIFA Club World Cups and Supercopa de Espana.
