Kenya Police sign Tusker keeper Patrick Matasi

• Matasi leaves Tusker with three months left on his contract
• Police had been trailing him since last year
• He has been at Tusker for a year and a half

Kenya Police FC have snapped up goalkeeper Patrick Matasi from Tusker FC, adding yet another arrow to their dangerously assembled quiver, hunting for a first ever FKF Premier League title.

Matasi had been on Police’s radar since last season, and despite staging a strike at the start of the campaign to force a move to the law enforcers, the brewers refused to release him as their valuation of the keeper was not met.

But now, with three months left on his contract, he has managed to secure a release, though Police had to pay an undisclosed fee to compensate for the three months left.

Matasi has already started training with Police and had said his goodbyes to his now former teammates at Tusker FC.

Enjoyed time at Tusker 

“I have enjoyed my time at Tusker FC, through good and bad times. I am grateful to the team for their support and grateful for what they have done to me. It is life, and at times, we all need to move. I know that those remaining will continue with the work,” said Matasi.

He added; “I am looking forward to my time at Police. I know there will be competition for places and I will not walk straight into the starting team. Job (Ochieng) has been there and done some good work and I will need to fight for my position,” he added.

He says he believes the goalkeepers he leaves behind are good enough to make his absence not felt.

“They now just have to step up and take the opportunity but I believe that it is something they can do,” Matasi said.

Head coach Robert Matano was also sad to see his keeper leave, but believes Brian Bwire, Mike Wanjala and Brian Opondo can all manage to seize the opportunity.

Wish him well 

“He (Matasi) is like my son and I am sad to see him leave but that is life. People come and go. I wish him all the best in his new team and I know he will succeed,” Matano said.

“We have good goalkeepers in the team. It has always been about chance and opportunity for them and now it has come. They have what it takes to fill the game,” added the tactician.

Meanwhile, Police have continued with strengthening the team with the arrival of Matasi being the latest of high end acquisitions.

They have already secured the services of left back Aboud Omar as well as striker Derrick Otanga. Omar returned back home after a long time stint in Greece while Otanga who was with KCB last season came back after a short spell in Libya.

“We have a strong squad that can challenge for the league. We have strengthened in crucial departments and I believe we can now challenge very well,” said Police FC head coach Francis Baraza.
