- Manchester City hosted Championship leaders Burnley in the FA Cup at the Etihad on Sunday evening
- Burnley visited with their head coach Vincent Kompany, a Manchester City legend
- Erling Haaland was on another Hat-trick as City thrashed Burnley 6-0 to book a semi-final slot at Wembley
Manchester City defeated Championship leaders Burnley 6-0 in the FA Cup quarter-finals, with Erling Haaland scoring his sixth hat-trick of the season.
After a dominant display against RB Leipzig in the Champions League, the Norwegian added another match ball to his collection.
Julian Alvarez scored a second-half brace either side of a Cole Palmer goal, assuring Clarets boss and former City captain Vincent Kompany had a miserable return to Etihad Stadium.
City’s bid for a treble is officially underway, with an FA Cup semi-final now added to Pep Guardiola’s schedule.
City dominated possession from the start, but early chances were restricted until Haaland popped up to beat Bailey Peacock-Farrell to Alvarez’s through pass, tapping beneath the Burnley goalkeeper after 32 minutes.
With only 179 seconds separating the two goals, the former Borussia Dortmund striker repeated the trick to double City’s advantage, finding space at the far post to tuck home after Phil Foden’s driven ball across the face of goal.
Haaland completed his hat-trick before the hour mark, smashing into an empty net after Foden’s low shot bounced into his path off the right-hand post.
Three minutes later, Alvarez joined in on the act, tapping home from close range after Kevin De Bruyne laid the ball on a plate for the Argentine striker, and Palmer added another after Peacock-Farrell could only palm Foden’s cross into his path.
City didn’t stop there, with Alvarez latching onto De Bruyne’s inviting through ball, turning Ameen Al Dakhil in the box, and firing in his second to seal another big victory.
Manchester City book another Wembley appearance
A semi-final date at Wembley is nothing new for City, who have now made the last four in this competition in six of their seven seasons under Guardiola, falling short only in the 2017-18 season.
City’s advancement makes them only the third team in Football League history to reach the FA Cup semi-finals for five straight seasons, joining Manchester United (1961-62 to 1965-66) and Arsenal (1961-62 to 1965-66). (2000-01 to 2004-05).
However, there is still work to be done after only capturing the trophy once in seven seasons.
Erling Haaland continues scoring form
Another hat-trick for Haaland brings his tally in all categories in his first season with City to 43, making him the sixth Premier League player to do so and the first since Harry Kane (41) and Mohamed Salah (44), who both did so in 2017-18.
Haaland also became the first player since Liverpool’s John Wark in 1984-85 to score a hat-trick in the Premier League, FA Cup, and European Cup/Champions League all in the same season.
City host Liverpool in the Premier League on April 1 after the international break, while Burnley’s march to promotion from the Championship continues a day prior at home to Sunderland.
