Manager Antonio Conte has left Tottenham Hotspur by mutual consent after 16 months in charge. He led Tottenham to fourth in the Premier League this season.

Antonio Conte has joined Mauricio Pochettino, Jose Mourinho and Nuno Espirito Santo on the list of managers who have tried to bring glory at Tottenham Hotspur.

Antonio Conte’s departure comes days after an extraordinary rant against his players after they threw away a 3-1 lead at Southampton, who are at the bottom of the table. Conte called the Spurs players selfish and criticized the club’s culture in a remarkable news conference.

Antonio Conte’s assistant, Cristian Stellini is expected to be in charge for the rest of the season. His deputy will be former Spurs midfielder Ryan Mason.

In the meantime, Tottenham Hotspur board will be looking for a new manager for the 2023-23 season. This is the second time in 23 months that a caretaker will be leading Spurs to the end of the season.

According to chairman Daniel Levy, everyone at Tottenham Hotspur has to do their best to ensure the best finish for the team.

“We have 10 Premier League games remaining and we have a fight on our hands for a Champions League place. We all need to pull together. Everyone has to step up to ensure the highest possible finish for our Club and amazing, loyal supporters.” BBC Sports quotes Daniel Levy.

Tottenham Hotspur struggled for consistency for much of Conte’s early tenure. They would later go on a six-game unbeaten run, including a 3-0 win over rivals Arsenal before securing a top four spot at the end of the season.

However, things have not been easy for Spurs this season. Their troubles have continued as they have recorded nine defeats and four draws in 28 league matches this season. Questions have been raised about their playing style by both fans and pundits.

Tottenham Hotspur, who are currently fourth on the Premier League table, suffered a shocking exit at the UEFA Champions League in the hands of AC Milan. This was after they were knocked out of the FA Cup by Championship side Sheffield United at the start of this month.

Following a torrid weekend in which Tottenham Hotspurs let a two-goal lead slip, Opta now calculate that Newcastle United and Liverpool have a higher chance of displacing Spurs at Europe’s top table. This is because the two teams have two games in hand over Spurs.

Antonio Conte’s departure means Tottenham Hotspur are currently in search for their fourth permanent manager in four years since the exit of Mauricio Pochettino in 2019. Conte, who previously won league titles with Chelsea, Juventus and Inter Milan, became Tottenham Hotspur’s manager in November 2021. He replaced Nuno Espirito Santo, who was sacked due to poor results.
