Will Casemiro miss the Carabao Cup Final?

  • Casemiro was sent off as Manchester United were reduced to 10 men against Crystal Palace
  • Here’s everything you need to know about Casemiro’s red card

Manchester United were reduced to 10 men in the final stages of their 2-1 Premier League victory over Crystal Palace at Old Trafford after Casemiro was sent off.

The Eagles’ Jeffrey Schlupp pulled one back, but Marcus Rashford’s second-half finish proved decisive after Bruno Fernandes gave United an early lead from the penalty spot.

It meant that Erik ten Hag’s side avoided immediate damage, but Casemiro has been a transformative presence in the United midfield since joining from Real Madrid last year.

Following his clash with Will Hughes, the Brazil international is set to miss a slew of crucial games.

Here’s everything you need to know about Casemiro’s red card, including how long he’ll be banned, which games he’ll miss, and whether United can appeal the punishment.

Why was he sent off?

After the midway point of the second half, Schlupp’s late challenge on United winger Antony sparked a melee involving multiple players from both sides.

Throughout the heated exchange, Casemiro appeared to restrain Hughes by wrapping his hands around the Palace midfielder’s neck.
Although referee Andre Mariner did not see the incident at first, he was alerted by the VAR and showed Casemiro a red card after reviewing his pitchside monitor.

How long is the ban?

The manner of Casemiro’s dismissal qualifies as an act of violent conduct, which carries a three-game domestic ban.

It is the same punishment as a straight red card in English football, with the exception of dismissals for denying a clear goalscoring opportunity if the offence is not adjudged to endanger an opponent.

The games Casemiro will miss

Signing on the last day before the deadline In Casemiro’s absence, Marcel Sabitzer is set to make his full United debut against Leeds United in the Premier League on Wednesday.

That game has been rescheduled after being postponed following the death of Queen Elizabeth II in September.

The new date works well for Casemiro, who will serve his suspension after the return league game at Elland Road on February 12 and Leicester City’s visit to Old Trafford on February 19.

In the meantime, United will face Barcelona in the Europa League, providing Casemiro with some competitive game time while he serves his domestic suspension.

No, after missing three Premier League games, the five-time Champions League winner will be available to play if fully fit.

The rescheduled game between Manchester United and Leeds is crucial. Initially, only two league games were scheduled between the Palace game and the Carabao Cup final, so Casemiro would have completed his suspension before the final.

Is Bruno Guimares banned too?

Casemiro is not the only Brazilian midfielder with a ban to serve before the Carabao Cup final.

Newcastle United’s Bruno Guimaraes was sent off late in the second leg of their semifinal against Southampton for a late challenge on Samuel Edozie.

Guimaraes’ absence, like that of his compatriot Casemiro, fits neatly into the schedule.

He missed West Ham’s 1-1 draw and will rest for the Premier League games against Bournemouth and Liverpool before returning refreshed for the trip to Wembley.

Will Manchester United appeal Casemiro’s red card?

United manager Erik ten Hag said the club would try to have Casemiro’s sentence overturned but admitted they don’t have a strong case.

The former Ajax coach admitted his player had “crossed a line,” but his frustrations stemmed from perceived inconsistencies in VAR implementation. Christian Eriksen suffered a severe injury as a result of an unpunished tackle from Reading striker Andy Carroll in the FA Cup last weekend. At the same time, one replay showed Palace striker Jordan Ayew grabbing for Fred, like Casemiro’s clash with Hughes in the same melee.

United manager Erik ten Hag stated that the club would attempt to appeal Casemiro’s sentence but admitted that they do not have a strong case.

Before the use of VAR in the Premier League, clubs frequently won appeals against red cards after reviewing video footage.

The fact that this part of the process now occurs during each VAR review makes overturning punishments far more complex.
