Liverpool and Everton meet in the Premier League this evening in one of the most anticipated games on the English football calendar, with the Merseyside derby often being a goal-filled affair.
The two city rivals have had some classic battles over the years, with no shortage of memorable Premier League moments when Everton and Liverpool meet.
We’ve decided to look back at some of the most memorable incidents between the teams during the Premier League era.

Following his stunning emergence in the red half of the city, Robbie Fowler found himself at the centre of fabricated drug rumours in Liverpool, with the forward choosing to make a mockery of the allegations during a 1999 Merseyside derby clash with Everton.
With the rumours believed to have originated from Everton supporters, Fowler chose to celebrate his goals in a 3-2 win over the Toffees with a simulation of him snorting the touchline – right in front of the Everton fans.
Fowler’s apology and a bizarre alternative explanation from Gerard Houllier, who claimed the incident was inspired by Cameroonian teammate Rigobert Song’s grass-eating celebration, failed to persuade the FA, who promptly handed the forward a four-game ban.
Fowler’s suspension may have cost him a chance at the Premier League’s Golden Boot after he received another two-game suspension for an incident involving Graeme Le Saux later in the season.
Gerrard’s hat-trick (2012)
Steven Gerrard was a key figure in Liverpool’s 3-0 win over Everton in the 2011/12 season.
Gerrard scored a hat-trick as Liverpool secured their biggest win over Everton in nearly a decade, becoming the first Merseyside derby hat-trick scorer since Ian Rush in 1982, and the first at Anfield since Fred Howe’s treble for Liverpool in 1935.
It was a special occasion for the Liverpool captain, who scored his first goal with a beautiful lifted finish over Tim Howard before being set up twice by Luis Suarez to claim the match ball.
Suarez mocks Moyes (2012)

“He [Suarez] has a history. It will turn supporters away from football because they [diving players] are very good at it.”
David Moyes’ comments about Luis Suarez came back to haunt the Everton manager ahead of a 2012 derby between the teams, with the Uruguayan sprinting towards the home bench after scoring at Goodison Park.
Suarez launched himself into a dive right in front of Moyes, and the latter’s comments appeared even more foolish after Everton captain Phil Neville was booked for a first-half simulation.
Everton rallied from two goals down to salvage a point in a 2-2 draw, though Moyes may have breathed a sigh of relief when an offside flag denied Suarez a winner – and his hat-trick – in stoppage time.
Mane’s match-winning moment (2016)

Late goals have so often decided the outcome of Merseyside derbies, and Sadio Mane scored one of the Premier League’s most recent winners, settling what had been a forgettable fixture with a 94th-minute winner at Goodison Park.
The game had been heading towards a goalless draw until Mane struck in the dying seconds, reacting first to a loose ball after substitute Daniel Sturridge had struck the post, to send the away fans into raptures.
With the victory, Everton’s derby record against Liverpool fell to just one victory in 20 encounters, adding insult to injury to their drama-filled rivalry.
Pickford fumbles, Origi’s dream
Perhaps none of Liverpool’s late interventions have been more agonizing for Everton supporters than Divock Origi’s bizarre winning goal in December 2018, when the forward scored in extraordinary circumstances to snatch a late, late win at Anfield.
The game was heading for a goalless draw when Jordan Pickford gifted Liverpool three points by fumbling a sliced Virgil van Dijk effort that had ballooned high into the air.
Van Dijk had turned away in disappointment after his failed attempt, only to hear Anfield erupt as Pickford fumbled the ball onto the crossbar and into the path of Origi, who headed home in the 96th minute.
It was a cruel way for Everton to lose, but it sparked wild celebrations from the home crowd. Jurgen Klopp dashed onto the field to join Alisson in celebrating as Liverpool added another late winner to their growing derby collection.
