Gor Mahia stormed to the top of the FKF Premier League standings after thrashing Wazito FC 4-0 at the Moi Sports Centre Kasarani, with Benson Omalla scoring thrice.
K’Ogalo have been on a blistering start to the season and have picked up their fourth win in five games to keep their hopes of reclaiming the title alive.
Omalla broke the deadlock in the eighth minute with a neat header at the backpost after being picked out by a decent cross from Boniface Omondi.
The two were to combine for the second goal minutes later, this time the diminutive winger playing through the middle to send through a defense splitting pass for Omalla to finish through.
He completed his first hattrick with another neat finish two minutes to halftime, this time Alpha Onyango picking him up with a brilliant through ball from midfield and the striker merely touching it beyond the keeper.
Gor Mahia get to 33 points
Midfielder John ‘Champe’ Ochieng then completed the job late in the second half as Gor Mahia moved to 33 points after 14 games, two ahead of Nzoia Sugar who have played a match more. They are eight points ahead of defending champions Tusker who have had a torrid start to the year.
Omalla meanwhile has taken a massive early lead in the race for the golden boot, his hattrick taking him to 15 goals in 14 games.
He has received praise from head coach Jonathan McKinstry. “What is different with Benson this year is that he is taking less touches of the ball. Last year he would take two three more touches and that is why he didn’t score. Right now he is placing himself well in the box and taking minimal touches and that is why he is scoring. But also, credit to those who are supplying him with the balls because they are doing an equally good job,” said the tactician.
Wazito FC meanwhile have continued to struggle this season and dropped to 16th in the standings with nine points from 13 games. They played the game without a head coach as their tactician Jeffers Odongo ditched the club and joined Kakamega Homeboyz as an assistant coach to Patrick Odhiambo.
Former Tusker FC goalkeeper Samwel Odhiambo, now the goalkeeping coach at Wazito, was the stand-in coach.
Punished for mistakes
“We were punished because of concentration errors especially at the back and in this level, you cannot make such mistakes. We have to go back to the drawing board and make out a good plan, work on our miatskes and improve. The league is tough but we have to keep working,” said Odhiambo.
The club has however reached an agreement with former Tusker FC double winning coach Fred Nkata to take over as head coach. The Ugandan coach has previously worked at Bandari FC, Muhoroni Youth and Kakamega Homeboyz.
He makes a return to Kenyan football, hoping he can inspire the team to good perfomances.
