The January transfer window has been closed after a hectic month-long window
Premier League clubs were at the forefront of spending for new players this January
Chelsea in particular, broke the record for most players acquired in a single month
The Premier League’s January transfer window saw a lot of spending.
To be precise, £780 million of the season’s total expenditure of £2.8 billion was spent.
However, the issue on everyone’s mind is: who did the best business? Who used cunning negotiations and exorbitant sums of money to secure anybody they could get their hands on?
The 20 Premier League teams performed as follows after spending all that money.
AFC Bournemouth

Dango Ouattara (FW) – Lorient – undisclosed
Darren Randolph (GK) – West Ham – free
Antoine Semenyo (FW) – Bristol City – undisclosed
Matias Vina (DF) – Roma – loan
Illia Zabarnyi (DF) – Dynamo Kyiv – undisclosed
Hamed Traore (MF) – Sassuolo – £20m
This January, Bournemouth spent more money than anyone had anticipated, especially on deadline day when they acquired Hamed Traore and Illia Zabarnyi for over £40 million.
The former will regularly provide for the team, while the latter, according to FM23, has the potential to develop into one of the league’s top defenders given the correct coaching, guidance, and playing time (the three things needed on FM23 anyways). Additionally, they possibly avoided a crisis by passing up Nicolo Zaniolo.
Arsenal

Leandro Trossard (FW) – Brighton – undisclosed
Jakub Kiwior (DF) – Spezia – £20m
Jorginho (MF) – Chelsea – £12m
The Gunners needed some top-notch depth this winter, and they got it.
Jorginho appears to be a particularly wise addition for a young Arsenal side that is poised to win the Premier League, since the midfielder brings winning experience to the squad.
Brentford
In
Byron Wilson (DF) – Coventry – free transfer
Kevin Schade (FW) – Freiburg – loan
Beaux Booth (MF) – Dorking – undisclosed
Romeo Beckham (MF) – Inter Miami – loan
A good signing is Kevin Schade. He’s a winger that takes on his man, which is pretty uncommon in today’s game (even if it shouldn’t be), so keep a watch out for him the remainder of the season.
However, the Bees undoubtedly would’ve benefited from adding a striker in case Ivan Toney experiences the “evil thing” before the season’s finish. They might soon regret not spending money on a replacement for number nine.
Chelsea

David Datro Fofana (FW) – Molde – undisclosed
Benoit Badiashile (DF) – Monaco – undisclosed
Andrey Santos (MF) – Vasca da Gama – undisclosed
Joao Felix (FW) – Atletico Madrid – loan
Mykhailo Mudryk (FW) – Shakhtar Donetsk – £88.5m
Noni Madueke (FW) – PSV Eindhoven – undisclosed
Malo Gusto (DF) – Lyon – £26.3m
Enzo Fernandez (MF) – Benfica – £107m
This has to be one of the best January transfer window for The Blues despite their underwhelming Premier League season.
Todd Boehly’s Chelsea have broken the record for a Premier League side number of players signed in a single month.
Palace added some midfield depth with the deadline-day signings of Naouirou Ahamada and Alberto Sambi Lokonga.
Good for them, maybe.
Leeds United
In
Max Wober (DF) – Red Bull Salzburg – undisclosed
Georginio Rutter (FW) – Hoffenheim – £30m
Weston McKennie (MD) – Juventus – loan
Diogo Monteiro (DF) – Servette – undisclosed
Georginio Rutter cost a lot of money, but he appears to have the potential to develop into a fantastic player for Leeds in the long run. Max Wober arrived and made an immediate impression.
Leeds’ signing of Weston McKennie, who has recently been in totally atrocious form for Juventus, prevents them from receiving a higher grade.
Manchester United
In
Jack Butland (GK) – Crystal Palace – loan
Wout Weghorst (FW) – Burnley – loan
Marcel Sabitzer (MF) – Bayern – loan
Even though Manchester United didn’t make many newsworthy acquisitions in January, the ones they did appear to be wise short-term bets.
When necessary, Wout Weghorst gives the attack an additional dimension, and Marcel Sabitzer will be a capable stand-in for the injured Christian Eriksen in midfield.
