Miami Dolphins cornerback Byron Jones made rounds in the NFL world on Saturday evening after he gave a shocking update concerning his injuries.

The 30-year-old said in a social media post that he “can’t run or jump” due to injuries he has suffered over the course of his career.

Byron Jones could have hinted at retiring when he said it had been an honour and privilege to play in the NFL. However, ESPN reports that the Miami Dolphins star is not retiring.

On his post, the cornerback cautioned other players telling them that no amount of success is worth chronic pain and disabilities. He advised them not to take the injections they are given, but if they have to, they should consult an outside doctor. Jones message is a real and sobering one.

“It was an honor and privilege to play in the NFL but it came at a regrettable cost I did not foresee. Much has changed in 8 years. Today I can’t run or jump because of the injuries sustained playing this game. DO NOT take the pills they give you. DO NOT take the injections they give you. If you absolutely must, consult an outside doctor to learn the long-term implications. In my opinion, no amount of professional success or financial gain is worth avoidable chronic pain and disabilities. Godspeed to the draft class of 2023.” Byron Jones posted on Twitter.

Byron Jones underwent a surgery in March last year to clean up a lingering injury that made things difficult for him during the 2021 season. He was to be ready by July but things didn’t go as expected since he was never activated off the PUP list.

If the Dolphins decide to release Jones this year, Fox News reports that they could save between $3.6 million and $13.6 million. The actual amount will depend on the timing of a potential release.

Byron Jones impressed NFL scouts eight years ago when he set a record for the long jump. As a result, the Dallas Cowboys selected him in the first round of the 2015 draft. In his first years, Jones spent time at corners and safety. He was a key member of the squad and missed only one game, which was in his final season with them.

Jones made the Pro Bowl in 2018 with the Dallas Cowboys. Two years later, he agreed to a five-year $82 million contract with the Miami Dolphins. He formed one of the best cornerback tandems in the league while playing alongside Xavien Howard.

Before going for surgery in March, Jones had managed 57 pass deflections as well as four interceptions. All of his eleven tackles for loss occurred while playing for the Dallas Cowboys. It remains to be seen if Byron Jones will make a return to the NFL after he recovers from injuries.
