  • Nzoia Sugar thrashed Wazito to move top of the standings

FKF Premier League champions Tusker FC dropped points for the third game in a row, losing a two goal lead to draw 2-2 with FC Talanta at their Ruaraka Complex backyard. Tusker had started the season with so much pace and power winning six in a row, but a loss to Bandari has now led to a three-game slide.

They have picked back to back draws; 0-0 against Nzoia Sugar and now 2-2 against Talanta.

“We played well for a few minutes then from there, we made simple mistakes that cost us the game. It is a disappointing result to be honest especially at home and we need to rise up now. This is a challenge to the players that we have to bounce back,” Matano said.

Ibrahim Joshua and Shami Mwinyi had scored within the opening 12 minutes of the game and looked as thugh the Brewers were headed for a rout, but Brian Yakhama halved the deficit before the break and Dennis Oalo scored the equalizer early in the second half.

The brewers were off to a brilliantly fast start and just three minutes into the game, Joshua, the club’s top scorer last season netted the opener when he shot from inside the box after being put through by a sleek Humphrey Mieno through pass.

They continued their dominance and in the 12th minute, Mieno was in the thick of things again, providing another assist, this time pitting Shami Kibwana through to score the second goal.

Against the run of play, Talanta pulled one back. They won a freekick from distance with Yakhama stepping forward and curling the ball to the bottom right. It took an awkward bounce evading keeper Patrick Matasi.

Immediately on the other end, Tusker should have had their two-goal lead back. David Majak turned well from 20 yards out and unleashed a strong shot which came off the upright. Immediately they had another opportunity when Boniface Onyango crossed to Joshua, but his connection at the near post attracted a brilliant save from the Talanta keeper.

They went to the break with a single goal lead, but it should have been more.

The brewers had a similar start to the second half, and they had a chance when Onyango’s cross found Joshua inside the box but his header was over.

Talanta caught Tusker napping with a setpiece once again. This time, a freekick was delivered from the left and Oalo sneaked in from behind Charles Momanyi to connect the ball into the net. It was a huge goal for Talanta, who had kept their patience and finally rewarded.

Complacent Tusker were astounded from their sleep and began to play with urgency. Majak was denied by the post once again, this time his curling freekick from 25 yards out coming off the outside of the bar.

They had more opportunities with John Njuguna who had just come on as a substitute striking wide while Joshua had another header fly over. The brewers made offensive changes bringing in their top scorer Deogratious Ojok and Jackson Macharia, but their efforts to fight for maximum points ended in vain.

Meanwhile, Nzoia Sugar went top of the table after thrashing Wazito FC 4-0. They are now on 21 points, same as KCB who beat City Stars 1-0. Ulinzi Stars moved to fourth with a 2-1 win over Bandari FC at their Lang’ata backyard.
