KCB down Sharks to move second in FKF PL

KCB celebrate their goal against Sharks
  • Eric Adem and Michael Mutinda scored for KCB
  • Sharks scored late through a penalty
  • KCB moved second in the standings

KCB rose to second in the FKF Premier League standings on Sunday after edging out Kariobangi Sharks 2-1 in a tightly contested match at the Kasarani Stadium. Eric Adem’s penalty and Michael Mutinda’s late goal sealed the victory for the bankers, though Sharks pulled a late one back via a Kevin Musamali penalty.

The bankers were efficient with their chances and possession, while Sharks were made to pay for too much possession without threat on goal.

“We played well but I believe our problem is that we are not converting chances. The build ups is really good, but we fail to make the most of it in the final third. It is something that we will address as a team moving forward,” said Sharks coach William Muluya.

KCB’s Michael Mutinda praised the attitude of his teammates and said they deserved to win. “It was a really tough game but we had the attitude and determination to win. We fought till the last minute and this is a huge win for us,” said the midfielder.

KCB had started the match well and had some chances. John Mwangi picked up the ball just inside the box and took a shot at goal, but the shot stopper made a fine save for a corner .

Sharks with a brilliant chance

On the other end, Sharks had a brilliant opportunity when Paul Okoth found himself one on one with the keeper, but his point blank shot was well saved by the impressive Bryne Omondi.

It was the first time that Sharks were getting into the KCB box and they should have made it count.

The bankers scored nine minutes to the break, Adem sending keeper john Otieno the wrong way from the spot. KCB were awarded a contentious penalty after Mike Oduor went down under a challenge from Keith Imbali, though the midfielder looked to have cleanly won the ball.

With a one-goal deficit at halftime, Sharks had to change tact coming back into the second period. They pinned the bankers into their own half and forced them to play deep.

Keith Imbali and Geoffrey Onyango were doing most of the damage in midfield, picking possession and spraying passes well.

They had a good chance in the 68th minute when Fredrick Alushula volleyed in a cross from the backpost, but Tyson Otieno’s connection was saved by the impressive Omondi in KCB’s goal.

In the 71st minute, Sharks were denied by the woodwork, this time Shariff Musa finding himself isolated on the right, but he couldn’t land his well taken shot on goal.

KCB made changes to manage the game and Sharks found it tough to penetrate against a compact and well organized backline.

At the death, when they were pushing bodies upfront for an equalizer, Sharks were stabbed, Mutinda scoring with a nifty finish at the near post.

Sharks pulled one back late on with another contested penalty, Kevin Musamali scoring. But, it was too little too late as the referee whistled off the match immediately after the restart.
