Meg Lanning took a break from cricket in August 2022 but is set to return to action next week. She will participate in the one-day international series against Pakistan.
The 30-year-old will captain the team for the defence of their women’s T20 World Cup title.
On the other hand, Alyssa Healy will miss the series because of a calf problem. The 32-year-old is, however, expected to be fit for the World Cup campaign.
Jess Jonassen, who recently made her comeback after a hamstring injury, is also expected to be fit for the global showpiece event.
Georgia Wareham is another top player who has been included in Australia’s squad after recovering from a serious knee injury.
Wareham, who plays as a leg-spinner, suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury back in October 2021. She only returned last week, playing for Victoria in a domestic one-day match.
National selector Shawn Flegler said it’s exciting to see Meg Lanning and Georgia Wareham back in action.
Shawn cites the players’ experience as crucial for the Australia squad in major tournaments like the Women’s T20 World Cup.
“Seeing Meg and Georgia back in action for Victoria has been exciting. Both bring a wealth of experience to the group, which is always crucial during major tournaments. Georgia, in particular, has had a tough run of injuries, but she’s shown a great deal of resilience, and her return is a real boost for the side.” Shawn Flegler said, as per CrickeTimes.
The 15-member squad is expected to defend the World Cup title. South Africa opens the tournament on February 10 as they face Sri Lanka in Cape Town.
Australia will begin their World Cup campaign on February 12, playing against New Zealand. They will then face Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and South Africa in the pool games.
The 2023 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup will be the eighth edition of ICC Women’s T20 World Cup. The final game of the tournament will be played on February 26.
Australia are a dominant force in women’s cricket. The nation has secured Commonwealth Games golds, the women’s Ashes and World Cups in Twenty20 and 50-over formats in the last three years.
